Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Baker.
Tori, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Well, I have always been in love with photography since I was young. I used to line all of my stuffed animals up and take “family photos” of them with my mom’s old Nikon. I participated in contests throughout my teenage years through various organizations that I was a part of and after I placed at a few state competitions, I started my business, Storibook Photography. This is my fourth year in operation and I have been a full-time college student for three of those years. I opened Storibook Photography’s sister company, Black Market Boudoir this fall. I now do shoots ranging from newborn and seniors to couple’s boudoir. There is no way to portray just how much photography changed my life. My camera became my best friend, always there to get my mind off of what was going on in regular life by helping me create art that I was proud of. Photography has been a constant in my life that has evolved with me, I know that no matter what happens in my life, I will always be creating.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
More than anything, I hope that my photos empower people when and where they need it. I want my photos of family members that have passed on to be looked at fondly because of their genuine smile. I want my couples to see the love that they shared on their wedding day and remember that the hard times are worth it. I want seniors to see their high school photos 20 years from now and laugh at how different things are from back then. I put my all into capturing genuine images for this reason. Photography is easy when you pose clients, click your shutter, and paste a preset on them. Photography is meaningful when you talk with friends, joke around and get real smiles, click the shutter, and edit them personally. My art is more than just a photograph, it is a sliver of time out of someone’s life that they are letting us into with my photo. It’s raw and personal.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
The best piece of advice that I could offer another creative is to take your time. Everyone grows at different rates in their progress and it is really easy to get too caught up in how everyone else is doing and not realize how well you’re doing. Another thing, especially for photographers, is to make sure that you are not trying too hard to recreate another persons work because you see that it was popular and abandoning the work that you are capable of. By focusing on yourself and your sessions, you can ensure that you are putting out the best content that you can while gaining real supporters that love your work because it is unique to your brand.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
The best way that people can support my work is to like and share my social media posts, and by keeping me in mind when you’re choosing a photographer! Word of mouth and recommendations do wonders for a small business like mine! You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as Storibook Photography, I am always looking for new clients looking to have their special moments documented!
