Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesly Garcia.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lesly. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Education has been a dream of mine ever since I was a little girl. I came to this country when I was five years old. My parents always instilled upon me the importance of an education. Since I was an undocumented immigrant, I was not granted financial assistance and other opportunities. But the couple of opportunities that I was given, I took them, and I worked very hard to finally graduate. For me, it was not only a goal but a dream to attain a higher education degree because my parents were not given the opportunity to do so. I attained a bachelor’s degree in Multiplatform Journalism in 2016 and a master’s degree in Digital Media Production in 2018. I became a first-generation college student in three families; my mom, my dad, and my stepdad’s family. I wanted to not only set an example to my younger siblings but also to undocumented students who come to this country in search of a better life.
I like being a leader in my community because I know that my story can inspire and motivate others. I pursued a degree in communications because I love the voice that the communications platform can give me. I consider journalism to be one of the most important tools for creating a positive change. I believe that this profession has an important role in creating change and making our world a better place. As a journalist, I love sharing my story and the stories of others.
I started doing photography two years ago as a way to give back. Initially, I did it to volunteer at animal shelters in the Houston and surrounding areas to take pictures of pets so I could help them get adopted. While I still volunteer, I have expanded my business more and do all kinds of events.
Has it been a smooth road?
Despite my prices being fair, sometimes people still feel that they are not as low as they can be. So as the nice person I am, sometimes I try to work with their budget. This is something that I have made it a mission to work on this year, remain as professional as possible by sticking to my prices. At the end of the day is still a business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
What makes my photography different from others is that I particularly like working for the medium class. I make my pricing very fair just so that people who do not have the budget can still capture the perfect moment. I consider photography a form of art and I feel that we are all deserving of keeping great memories with us forever. My company is a direct reflection of who I am and what I stand for, so I would love to travel around the world to see more beauty and learn from others’ stories as well.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Overall, I think that Houston is a great place for photography. My customers are usually medium class families, but I think that a photography can honestly be started out anywhere. Obviously, if someone wants to focus on like fashion or models, big cities would be the go to. Just as an example. But there is beauty everywhere! Whether is in people, landscapes, events, or animals… photography starts with a camera and it’s taken where your imagination and creativity takes you.
