Meet Greg Bennett of DJ Simba in Southwest Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Bennett.

Greg, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am originally from Richmond/Rosenberg and moved to Alief in 2003 but Alief shaped me to be the man I am today. I am a graduate from Alief Hastings high school and currently attend Texas A&M University Kingsville as a full-time student to study Finance and Accounting. I am also a father of two beautiful girls named Penelope and Rylee who motivate me to go hard everyday and to be a great role model for the both of them. I began my dj career in 2015 after realizing that my taste and experience in music should be displayed through my performances. Being a dj has allowed me to witness so many things such as performing in front of hundreds of people to ensure their experience was amazing. I came up with the name DJ Simba because of the color and length of my beard which reminded me of a lions mane. My talents have pushed me to many gigs such as performing at showcases, private parties, weddings and becoming an on-campus dj for my school at Texas A&M University Kingsville. I hope to continue my success and grow further with it to pursue my dream of being a global dj and great role model for others.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, lol. In the beginning, it was definitely tough trying to get gigs and getting used to performing in front of so many people. My first gig was a small party in front of only 10 to 15 people just to get started. Where I got, the most practice was djing many kickbacks and parties that me and my friends used to throw in the summer of 2016. We would have parties every weekend and I would dj all of them which helped me become more comfortable with my abilities. Even after that, it was hard to get gigs at clubs and bars in Houston because they’ll already have their certain DJs for particular nights. Many times I’ve wanted to give up on DJing but I had to realize that if I worked hard for what I wanted that eventually, everything would work out.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with DJ Simba – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Well, my business is DJing. I’ve DJ’d private parties, Weddings, Showcases and much more. I’m known for supplying music for parties and to make sure the people that attend are very satisfied. What I am most proud about is that DJing is a certain job that I’ve stuck with for the past three years. Which is currently the only job that I have focused on the most in my life. What sets me apart from most is that I make sure that everyone has a good time and will go the extra mile to make sure that happens.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to finish school and receive my business degree. What I’m looking forward to is to find a job in the field of my degree and to continue DJing as a side job to better my craft.
