Meet May Urias

Today we’d like to introduce you to May Urias.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Since a very young age, I was interested in art and tattooing. I loved to watch tattoo shows on tv; they would show me how tattooing is art and how someone can create such a beautiful piece on the skin. I was born in El Salvador, my dad and I moved to South Florida when I was ten years old. In my country tattoos are a bad thing a bad “look” on people, so I didn’t know much about tattoos until I moved to the United States. When I turned 13 years old, I let my parents know I had finally found a career that I wanted to do which is tattooing. Parents weren’t too happy but didn’t bring me down, so I kept going with my dream. At age 19 I graduated from a medical assistant program which was part of my plan to become a tattoo artist. I worked as a medical assistant and also did my tattoo apprenticeship at Galaxy Tattoo. My mentors Star Lozano and Osi Cruz helped me so much! I appreciate them so much for helping my dream come true. I’m currently working at Gypsy Rose studio. My career is just starting, but I can’t wait to see how far I can go.

Please tell us about your art.
I love black work, black and grey, traditional tattoo and Anime/kawaii style as well. I think creating art is so fun but tattooing your art is more fun. I hope to inspire people through my art to be creative and be themselves with art that’s going to be on them for a long time.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
First thing you have to keep in mind is not to give up. You won’t start off good you need patience and willingness to learn. Everything is possible it won’t be easy, but it is possible no matter the situation. Patience, Willingness to learn, and sacrificing for what you want in life will get you there.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
