Akela Woodard-Mardis shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Akela , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, my greatest joy has come from being present with my husband and children as they reach exciting new milestones. My husband was recently named Head Coach for Varsity Girls Basketball at Sterling High School, my son has entered his senior year of high school, and my daughter just began middle school. Both of my children were also inducted into the National Honor Society, a testament to their hard work and dedication. Watching their growth reminds me that every season of life carries its own purpose and beauty. It encourages me to slow down, celebrate their accomplishments, and remain grateful for the journey we’re blessed to share together.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Akela, and I am a proud alumna of both Texas A&M University and my beloved HBCU, Prairie View A&M University, where I earned three degrees, one bachelor’s and two master’s. I currently serve as a Community Outreach Coordinator, overseeing programs that connect youth and families with vital resources and opportunities for growth. In addition, I am the founder of ANM Mediation Services, where I am dedicated to helping individuals and organizations resolve conflicts and restore peace. I am also honored to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. What makes my journey unique is how it weaves together my passion for community service, youth empowerment, and justice into one meaningful path
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I believe what breaks the bonds between people is often a lack of understanding and communication , when we stop truly listening to each other, assumptions and hurt can grow. What restores those bonds is intentional communication and respect. In my work as a mediator and community advocate, I’ve seen how powerful it is when people feel heard and understood. Healing happens when we create space for honest dialogue and approach each other with grace and a willingness to rebuild. That’s where real peace begins.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that has held me back the most in my life is the fear of failure. Worrying that if I didn’t get everything right, I wouldn’t be enough. For a long time, that fear made me second‑guess opportunities and play it safe. But over time, I’ve learned that failure is actually where growth begins. Every challenge I’ve faced, from starting my own business to balancing school and motherhood, has taught me resilience and reminded me that even missteps can lead to purpose. Now, instead of letting fear stop me, I let it push me to prepare, pray, and persevere.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I think a lot of smart people get it wrong by believing that success is only measured by individual achievement. In reality, true impact happens when we uplift others along the way. I see so many brilliant people chasing titles or accolades but forgetting that leadership is about service, listening, mentoring, and making space for others to rise. If we shifted that perspective, we’d build stronger communities and create lasting change
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not fully stepping into my purpose, using my voice, education, and experiences to create meaningful change for those in my community who often feel overlooked. This goes beyond a career goal, it is truly part of my calling. If I didn’t pursue this path wholeheartedly, I would always wonder whose life I could have touched and what difference I could have made.
