Cindy Pillow shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Cindy, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Honestly, I think integrity matters most to me. It’s kind of the foundation for everything else. Without integrity, intelligence can go the wrong way and energy can get spent in all the wrong places. But I also think it takes a certain kind of intelligence to even realize how important integrity really is — to understand that doing the right thing, even when nobody’s watching, is what actually lasts. And these days, it takes a lot of energy to stick with that. The world moves fast, and it’s easy to get pulled off course, so staying true to what you believe in takes real effort.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Cindy, and my husband, Mike, and I run Rump Scrubbers. Before this, I spent nine years as a custom cake artist — competition award-winning and made more birthday cakes than I can even count. After my mom passed away, I wanted to honor her memory. She had such a love for soap making, so I gave it a try and instantly fell in love. Before long, I had way more soap than my family could ever use, so I took some to a pop-up market just for fun. It went great, and Mike and I started doing markets together. A year later, I closed my cake business and went all-in with soap making.
What started with a few bars of soap and bath bombs has grown into a full self-care and home line and our newest candle line, Hey Lulu by Rump Scrubbers.
Everything we make comes from the heart. We put a lot of love into every product because we truly care about what we do and the people we do it for. Our goal is to make everyday products feel a little bit special — a little bit of luxury that still feels down-to-earth
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad taught me the most about work. He had an incredible work ethic — running his own air conditioning business from when I was six months old while working at Anheuser-Busch until retirement, and then continuing the business full time. He was strong, loving, generous, and full of knowledge.
He was also an amazing teacher in the everyday moments — we worked on my old clunker Mustang together in high school, and he always showed me how to do things right. He taught me that you can work hard, have fun, and care for the people and things that matter. So much of how I run my business today comes from him.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Honestly, I don’t have a lot of fear when it comes to business. I grew up around an entrepreneur — my dad, so I know what hard work looks like and feel confident in that world. The one thing I’m afraid of is heights. Unfortunately for my husband, that means we’ll never get to take a road trip to the top of a mountain — We’ve tried, but I just can’t do it.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes — the public version of us really is the real version of us. What people see at markets or online from Mike and me is exactly who we are with our friends, family, and everyone else in our lives. We’re genuine, open, and show up as ourselves no matter where we are. I think that’s part of why people connect with our brand — it’s built on honesty, love, and hard work, and that comes straight from both of us.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I hope people remember me as a business owner who made good, honest products. I want them to say that Mike and I were always enthusiastic about sharing things we truly loved, things that worked for us, and that we shared them in a genuine, open, and honest way. For me, it’s not just about making products — it’s about connecting with people and creating something that brings a little joy or comfort into their everyday lives.
