Craig Carter shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Craig , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
My recent achievement that filled me with pride was having my artwork permanently showcased at the Prairie View Starbucks, where it serves as a positive reflection of the local community. The overwhelmingly positive feedback I received from the mayor and city officials was truly empowering.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Craig Carter (Craig C. The Artist), a self-taught mixed media visual artist from Houston, Texas, who has made a lasting impact nationally and internationally through my award-winning work. My art celebrates the beauty and diversity of people of color, elevating their stories through my unique and innovative style.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
It was a collective vision of family members and friends who empowered me to unlock the full potential of my artwork, transforming it into a celebrated reality that shines in galleries and museums.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I first embarked on my artistic journey, seeking inspiration and guidance, I faced rejection due to my art style and appearance being deemed “too urban.” Yet, I refused to let this setback deter me from realizing my aspirations. I persevered, submitting my work to galleries and art shows, until my talents were finally recognized and celebrated.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely, the public version of myself is the genuine me. I don’t know any other way to be.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story I would want to leave behind is to empower and uplift young black children, instilling in them the unwavering belief that their dreams are limitless, regardless of their surroundings or appearance. Let your obstacles become stepping stones to success, fueling your unrelenting pursuit of greatness and growth.
