An Inspired Chat with Dee Fields of South Houston

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dee Fields. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Dee, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
“Would I hire me? Absolutely — without hesitation.”

I would hire me because I bring a rare combination of passion, purpose, and proven experience to the table. I don’t just run The Dorcas Collection — I live the mission behind it. Everything I do is rooted in empowering women to define their personal style, embrace their confidence, and feel truly seen.

I have over a decade of hands-on experience in fashion, styling, production, and leadership. I’ve participated in major platforms like Full Figured Fashion Week, produced shows of my own, and built a boutique that prioritizes inclusivity, quality, and real representation. My work isn’t just business — it’s advocacy, empowerment, and service to a community I deeply understand.

Beyond that, I’m resilient. I’ve built a brand from the ground up, navigated challenges, adapted, and continued pushing forward with creativity and purpose. I’m solutions-focused, professional, and always willing to learn and grow. When I commit to something, I show up fully.

So yes — I would hire me, because I know the value I bring, the heart I lead with, and the results I can produce. Anyone would be lucky to have someone like me on their team.”

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
“Hi, I’m Dorcas Fields — the visionary behind The Dorcas Collection.”

For years, I built my brand serving primarily plus-size women, and that experience shaped my passion for fashion with purpose. But as my vision grew, so did my clientele. Today, The Dorcas Collection has evolved into a boutique experience that serves all sizes, offering custom, personality-driven pieces that speak to who you are — not just the number on your tag.

I believe style should be a reflection of your identity, your energy, and your story. That’s why I transformed my brand into a space where every woman can feel seen and styled with intention. Whether you’re curvy, slim, tall, petite, or anywhere in between, my goal is to curate looks that capture your essence and elevate your confidence.

The Dorcas Collection is no longer just a boutique — it’s a personalized fashion experience. From custom looks and curated wardrobe selections to on-set styling, personal shopping, and closet reinvention, every service is built around authenticity and individuality.

My mission is simple:
To help women of all sizes define their personal style, express their personality, and love the way they look — boldly and unapologetically.

This new era of The Dorcas Collection is inclusive, intentional, and deeply personal. I’m honored to style anyone ready to step into their most confident, powerful self. As trends continue to embrace expressive details like junk purses, junk hats, junk socks, and statement ties, I’ve stepped it up a notch—curating custom junk sweatshirts that turn everyday pieces into wearable conversations. Each creation is designed to reflect personality, confidence, and individuality, because style should always feel like you.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
“Who was I before the world told me who I had to be?”

Before the world tried to shape me, label me, or limit me, I was exactly who God designed me to be — just like the Dorcas in Acts 9:36, a woman “full of good works and charitable deeds.”

My birth name is Dorcas, and it took me years to understand that my name wasn’t an accident — it was a calling. The Dorcas in the Bible was a woman who used her hands, her creativity, and her heart to serve others through the gift of making garments. She clothed her community not just with fabric, but with love, dignity, and care.

And before life, people, and expectations tried to tell me who I had to be, that’s exactly who I was — a woman gifted to create, to uplift, and to pour into others through the work of my hands.

I was a designer in spirit long before I ever picked up a piece of fabric.
I was a nurturer long before I ever had a platform.
I was a giver long before the world taught me to shrink or second-guess myself.

The truth is, I have always been who God named me:
A woman with a purpose tied to creativity, service, confidence, and transformation.

It just took time for me to grow into the fullness of it and recognize that everything I do — from styling to curating personality-driven pieces — is simply the modern expression of the same gift Dorcas carried in the Bible.

Before the world told me who I had to be, I was already her.
And now, I’m finally walking boldly in it.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
“Was there ever a time you almost gave up?”

Absolutely. I more than almost gave up — I came right to the edge of shutting everything down.

The lack of sales were heavy. Engagement was low. People only shopped when I had a sale, and the moment the discounts stopped, so did the support. I went over a year with no sales at all. Imagine pouring your heart into something, day after day, and feeling like no one sees it. It was discouraging. It was draining. And if I’m honest, it made me question everything — my gift, my brand, and even my purpose.

I truly thought about walking away.

But then something happened that shifted everything for me.

I was invited back to do a fashion show I had participated in previously, and I had nothing — no budget, no new inventory, no way to buy anything fresh. All I had was what I had already created, worn, or stored away over time.

So I did what women of faith, strength, and creativity have always done:
I made something out of what I already had.

I repurposed old pieces.
I reimagined past looks.
I redesigned clothing that was sitting in storage.

And THAT moment — standing backstage with pieces that came from my own hands and imagination — reminded me of why I started in the first place. It reminded me of the biblical Dorcas, who used her hands to create garments that blessed others. It reminded me of the gift God placed in me long before the business, the sales, or the struggles.

That experience became the turning point.
The pivot.
The rebirth of The Dorcas Collection.

It showed me that my true gift wasn’t in selling inventory — it was in curating custom, personality-driven pieces that carry intentionality, story, and soul. It pushed me to evolve my brand into what it is today: a place where creativity leads, individuality is honored, and every piece has purpose.

So yes… I almost gave up.
But that moment taught me that sometimes the breaking point is really the birthing point.
And I’m grateful I didn’t quit before I discovered the direction I was truly meant to take.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
“What truths are so foundational in my life that I rarely articulate them?”

There are a few truths that sit so deeply in me that I don’t always speak them out loud — not because I’m hiding them, but because they’ve become the quiet foundation of who I am.

1. God named me on purpose.
Long before I understood the weight of the name Dorcas, the truth was already living in me. I was created with a gift in my hands, compassion in my heart, and creativity in my spirit. I don’t always say it, but I know I am walking in a divine assignment.

2. I am built to rise after every setback.
I’ve had moments where business was slow, engagement was low, and support seemed nonexistent — yet somehow, I kept getting back up. That resilience isn’t loud; it’s steady. It’s a truth I rarely articulate, but it has carried me through the hardest seasons.

3. My creativity is not just talent — it’s ministry.
Whether I’m styling someone, repurposing a garment, or curating a personality-driven piece, I’m doing more than fashion. I’m uplifting, affirming, and helping people see themselves differently. That purpose runs deep, even when I don’t put it into words.

4. I don’t need validation to know my value.
Sales, likes, comments — they go up and down. But my worth? My calling? My gift? Those stay the same. I may not always say it, but I always know it.

5. I was made to create experiences, not just clothes.
What I do now — curating custom, personality-driven pieces — is an extension of who I’ve always been. Even before the pivot, before the repurposing, before the fashion shows, that truth was alive in me. I just hadn’t fully recognized it yet.

These are the truths that form the quiet backbone of my life.
They guide me, steady me, and remind me who I am even when I don’t say a word.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
“What is the story I hope people tell about me when I’m gone?”

I hope they tell the story of a woman who saw the beauty, value, and potential in every person she encountered — a woman who didn’t just sell clothes, but empowered people to see themselves differently.

I want them to say I was fearless in pursuing my purpose, even when the path was hard, uncertain, or lonely. I want them to remember that I used my gifts — my creativity, my hands, my heart — to lift others up, to create beauty, and to make people feel seen and celebrated exactly as they are.

I hope they remember me as someone who refused to shrink, someone who walked boldly in her calling, and someone who inspired others to embrace their own gifts and confidence. I want them to say that I made a difference not just through what I created, but through how I made people feel — empowered, worthy, and unstoppable.

Ultimately, I hope the story they tell is one of love, purpose, and transformation — a story that points back to the gifts God placed in me and how I chose to share them with the world.
