An Inspired Chat with DJ Forrest Houston of Downtown

DJ Forrest Houston shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

DJ, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first part of my day is all about getting grounded and setting the tone. I usually start with some form of movement—either hitting the gym or getting in a long walk to rack up my steps. That helps me clear my head and stay sharp physically and mentally.

After that, I’ll check in on social media, respond to messages, review any event details coming up, and make sure everything on my calendar is tight. I like to stay a few steps ahead so my clients know they’re working with someone reliable and fully dialed in.

It’s a simple routine, but it keeps me focused, calm, and ready to deliver at a high level.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m DJ Forrest, a professional DJ based in Houston with over two decades of experience specializing in weddings, corporate events, and upscale private parties. I’m the owner of Xceptional DJs + Photo Booths, and I’ve built my reputation around consistency, professionalism, and reading the room better than most.

What makes my brand unique is the balance I strike between precision and energy — I bring a polished, elevated presence to every event, but still know how to keep the dance floor packed and the vibe on point. Clients come to me because they want someone they can fully trust to handle one of the most important days of their lives or represent their brand at a high level. That trust means everything to me.

Right now, I’m also working on expanding into the digital space with content and merch that reflect the energy behind the scenes — from fitness to crypto to mindset. But at the core, I’ll always be about showing up, delivering the best, and making sure every event feels effortless for my clients!

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, the job itself did. Being a DJ taught me the principle I live by now: the show must go on.

No matter what’s happening in my personal life, once I commit to an event, that moment takes full priority. There’s no “calling in” when it comes to weddings or corporate events — you show up, you deliver, and you make it seamless for the client every single time.

That mindset shaped how I operate. It’s about professionalism, consistency, and understanding that your energy sets the tone. People are counting on you — and that trust isn’t something I take lightly.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell him this: You can’t please everyone — and that’s okay.

Early on, I put a lot of pressure on myself to be everything to everyone. Over time, I learned that real success comes from staying true to who you are, showing up consistently, and doing your best — not bending in every direction trying to make everyone happy.

Trust your gut, keep your standards high, and the right people will always find you.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no.

The public version of me — especially online — is definitely a more amplified version. It’s high energy, opinionated, and unfiltered at times. But in real life, especially when I’m DJing, I’m much calmer and more measured. I take the job seriously and hold myself to a very high standard.

When it’s someone’s big day or a major corporate event, it’s not about being the loudest person in the room — it’s about being the most dependable, composed, and in control. That version is just as real — it’s the one that delivers

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I cared. Not just about the music or the logistics… but about the people, the moments, and the energy I brought into every event.

I hope they say I truly gave a damn — sometimes even more than the clients themselves. That I went above and beyond not because I had to, but because I took pride in making things unforgettable. That I showed up fully, every single time.
