We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ginger Maclay. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Ginger, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
The activity that makes me lose track of time is my artwork. I enjoy making retro 1920s themed art by painting, collage and other mixed media. I use mostly round or heart shaped canvases, art nouveau designs, incorporate miniature Victorian frames, and paint Zeigfield Follies girls and flappers. I have a life long love of art and am working on a website to sell some of the pieces.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Ginger Maclay, and I specialize in website design and development, graphic design, SEO and social media marketing. I studied Fine Art at Savannah College of Art and Design and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1996. While living in Atlanta, Georgia after college, I was a web developer for BellSouth Real Pages, a graphic designer for Georgia Public Television and a multimedia designer at the Center for Disease Control Nutrition and Physical Activity Division. I decided to move to Houston in 2006 to be closer to family, and started my own business as a freelance web and graphic designer in 2007. I named it Lucky Ace Web Design, and I have been happy to provide web development services to small to medium size businesses across Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and the Caribbean.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me most about work. He started his own business refurbishing printer cartridges in 1989 and now has a successful business installing network cabling and security systems for businesses. He inspired me to start my own business. He also inspired my brother to start his own business.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be to “let go and let God”. No matter how difficult life becomes, you should not worry or doubt because God has a greater plan and everything will be ok.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I believe authentic human connection should be protected at all costs. It is the force behind kindness, empathy and mentorship that brings people together and moves humanity forward in a positive way.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes! I absolutely enjoy what I do. I love the creative aspect and I love helping small businesses become successful through the services I provide.
