Good morning Malika, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I believe I’m called to be a full time entrepreneur that will be a force in the industry of hair, influencing and so much more. For many years, Fear crippled me into staying in the norm of a “career” . But, truly FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. Then, the security I had in a job was removed twice in less than 12 months. It was a clear sign that God truly wanted to launch into the deep and trust him in this new journey as an entrepreneur.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi everyone! My name is Malika Hutchinson. I am a full time curvy influencer and founder of Mel’s Wigs and Co – a custom glueless wig company. Currently, I’m living in the dream of being a vocal speaker about faith, showcasing stylish outfits for curvy and plus-size women while still running a business catered to the busy woman. Mel’s Wigs & Co provides Medical Wigs in the USA to patients with medical induced hair loss – i.e cancer, alopecia, etc. These wigs are at a low to no cost for each client. I’m so passionate about having each woman feel confident, beautiful, and stress free with each Mel’s Wigs and Co wig. It’s the one stop shop for quality hair, fully customized wig, and luxury customer service.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was bold, fearless, courageous feeling as though the sky was not the limit. Before the voice of the world entered – I wanted to be a public speaker that would tell people about Christ and share love and kindness to everyone. I was so passionate about justice that I wanted to be a defense attorney and use my bold voice for justice.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self it would be: “Girl, you are more than able.” Do not let the voices and negativity of others project onto you. The things, passion, desires that God placed in you are for a reason. Your zeal isn’t too much – it reflects the light of Christ that’s within you. Your joy isn’t too much – it’s a magnet to pull people closer. Do not ever doubt yourself. Yes, life won’t always go as planned. But remember You, Malika, are more than able. You are able to have a joyful life in Christ. You are able to run a successful business(es). You are able to pivot and switch from the program. You are more than able to use your voice to speak in front of thousands of people. You are more than able to have the life you picture for yourself. Most importantly, you are more than able to achieve greatness. So remember Malika, in every doubtful thought, – you are more than able because Christ lives in you.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I rely on the Holy Spirit. God is the creator. So why not become creative through the originator. Many of my viral moments, business strategies, or even biggest success has been through revelation in my quiet time with Christ. It sounds cliche to say this- but God will truly give illumination and show us great and mighty things we do not know when we call him. In the unknown you begin to birth the things that has been hidden.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
They will misunderstand that everything came with ease. The success of Mel’s Wigs and Co came after 10 years of toiling, failure, tears, doubt and so much fear. I constantly had to pivot, cry out to God, rely on my family to truly even start this company. I never envisioned MWC being what it is today. I started it with the intention of just washing wigs in the Houston area – not knowing it was going to be an international business focusing on cancer & alopecia patients.
I truly had no vision. God gave the vision – I executed it while still unsure about the journey.
