We recently had the chance to connect with Melody Stevens and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melody, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
“One thing people always get wrong about Design on a Dime Interiors is the name. When they hear it, they think we’re cheap but that couldn’t be further from the truth. We focus on high-quality, timeless design using value-driven, top-notch materials. We take seriously the investment our clients make, adding real value, focusing on ROI, and ensuring an stress-free experience every step of the way. At the end of the day, Design on a Dime isn’t about being cheap. It’s about being smart, thoughtful, intentional, and a good steward of the investment clients give.”
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
“Hi, I’m Shingairai Melody Stevens, founder and CEO of Design on a Dime Interiors in Conroe, Texas. I started my business with a simple mission: to bring high-quality, timeless, and functional design to homes without clients having to compromise style or budget. Our name often surprises people, but it reflects our approach is playful, smart, and intentional while delivering luxury-level results with value-driven, quality materials.
What makes us unique is how we combine creativity, practicality, and heart. We don’t just design or remodel spaces; we transform how clients experience their homes, giving them confidence, comfort, and pride. Every project is personal and intentional, focusing on ROI, adding value, and creating an stress-free experience.
Right now, I’m working on a tiny home community that redefines mobile home living. I’m bringing elegance, safety, and pride to mobile home spaces while making them beautiful homes that are more accessible. My work is all about impact, creativity, and helping people live beautifully in spaces that truly reflect them.”
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
The person who saw me clearly before I could see myself was my dad. From a young age, he recognized that my creative, outside-the-box thinking was a gift, even when I didn’t fully understand its value myself. He never pushed me into the conventional path or forced me into something safe; instead, he encouraged me to be different in a healthy, intentional way. He planted in me the belief that my unique mind was a goldmine and that with creativity and dedication, I could achieve anything.
Knowing he believed in me gave me the confidence to take bold leaps, like starting Design on a Dime Interiors and the drive to push boundaries, ultimately proving to myself that I truly could turn my vision into reality.”
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to believe in whatever gift you have fully, take bold leaps without fear, and know that the path you’re carving is exactly where you’re meant to shine.”
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
“They would probably say what really matters to me is my family and the people I love. They know I show up for people. They’d tell you I care deeply about being present, about making sure people feel seen, supported, and cared for. They’d probably say I have a big heart and that I’m always trying to pour into others whether it’s time, wisdom, or just a listening ear.
They’d also say I’m driven by faith or would they say red wine…lol. No seriously, It’s not about titles or achievements for me; it’s about relationships and living a life that has meaning.”
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
“ I’m working on creating a tiny home community. We’re taking existing mobile home frames and transforming them into beautiful, functional homes with traditional house specs.
Mobile homes have historically carried a stigma as low-income housing, even though they’ve always represented ownership and independence. My goal is to change that perception. By designing homes that are safe, elegant, and intentional, we’re building a community where people feel pride in their space and their ownership.
The payoff for me isn’t just financial, it’s transformational. This project will reshape how people view affordable homeownership, foster community, and prove that living well is possible at every price point.”
