We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mrs. Rochelle Tyler. Check out our conversation below.
Rochelle, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me is definitely full, but I love it. I start by making sure my kids are off and ready for high school and middle school. During the day, I’m a full-time 8th grade math teacher and also serve as the middle school mentor to new teachers at my campus, so my school days are very busy and rewarding. After school, I head to my office where I tutor students through my business. That’s my time to really connect with students one-on-one and support their growth in math. I balance all of this while also making sure my family is taken care of, so every day is a mix of teaching, mentoring, tutoring, and family all the things I’m passionate about.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Rochelle Tyler, and my journey with tutoring began back in middle school when I would help elementary students and even my own sisters with math. I loved watching their confidence grow, and that joy of helping others succeed is what eventually led me into education.
Today, I serve as a full-time 8th grade math teacher, a team lead, and a mentor to first-year teachers. I’m also the founder of Just Math Tutoring, where I continue to support students one-on-one outside the classroom. What makes my approach unique is that I design an individualized plan for every student, aligning my lessons with their school district’s curriculum and focusing on the whole child. That means we go beyond homework we work on skills, strategies, and most importantly, building a positive mindset about math.
In both my classroom and tutoring sessions, I’ve had the privilege of seeing incredible transformations. Many of my students start out not passing the state assessment, by the next assessment they show remarkable growth.
Right now, I’m working on expanding Just Math Tutoring so I can reach even more families, especially those who may not have access to quality math support. My passion has always been helping students build confidence in math, but more importantly, helping them see themselves as successful learners in life.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
That person was my younger sister. I didn’t realize she was watching me so closely when I was younger, helping other students and tutoring on the side. She would often tell me, “You should really do something with tutoring,” but at the time I was afraid and thought, I can’t teach full-time and run a business, too. What I didn’t see in myself, she already saw so clearly.
Now, looking at her as a business owner, I admire her courage and confidence. In many ways, she believed in me before I believed in myself. Her encouragement and example pushed me to step into tutoring as more than just a side passion and to build it into what has now become Just Math Tutoring.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self: “You can do it all don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t.” I spent so much time doubting myself, thinking I couldn’t balance teaching, and eventually building my tutoring business. Looking back, I realize I was capable of more than I gave myself credit for, I started a home based bakery then closed that chapter to walk into having a booked tutoring business. Who would have thought that but I embrace my younger self now being so full of ideas. I’m back to believing that we can do it all so I thank you and embrace the leader that we are. So younger self do not doubt yourself know that you have the power yo become who you are meant yo be and know that you really can do it all. Surround yourself with positive people that want you to win and it’s okay to share your accomplishments it’s not bragging. I would let my younger self know that you are uniquely made and do not be afraid of the power you have within.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that what really matters to me is helping others and growing every day. I’m full of ideas, and when I focus on something, I dive deep researching, learning, and finding ways to improve. Recognition isn’t important to me; I love what I do and find fulfillment in making a real difference. Whether it’s supporting a student, or helping another person to get a business started, I’m always the first to step in and lend a hand.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I used to do what I was told to do, following the expectations of others, but now I’m focusing on transitioning into what I feel I was born to do. A few years ago, I started baking and selling cakes at the farmers market. People would ask me why I was doing it when I had a “good job,” but it brought me so much joy. When the pandemic forced me to shut it down and I went back to just working my day job, I realized something was missing that spark that made me truly happy.
A friend asked me what I was passionate about, and I immediately said tutoring. The moment I said it, that spark came back. Now, when people question my path, I simply say that entrepreneurship and tutoring bring me immense joy. I love going to my office, teaching in my own way, and helping students grow. This is the moment I feel I’m truly transitioning into what I was born to do on my own terms.
