An Inspired Chat with Sara Alavi of Houston

We recently had the chance to connect with Sara Alavi and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Sara, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Who are you learning from right now?
My mom. My mother is one of the most resilient, courageous, compassionate humans I know. Unless you personally know her, you would not guess what she has endured, nor would she show it to you. She wears a smile through it all, counts her blessings, and continues to inspire me every single day. She is my teacher and I love her more and more every day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sara Alavi. I began my career early on as a singer/songwriter and musical theatre performer. I later dove into the film industry, as a script writer, actress and producer. While pursuing my career in entertainment, I volunteered and desired to raise awareness for non-profit sectors and humanitarian causes close to my heart. I became Ambassador at Large for non-profit Peace Worldwide Organization, after volunteering numerous years for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Leading in the creative arts is a way for me to express empathy. Film and music are therapeutic ways to address topics related to these areas close to my heart.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
The absolute root of all evil is hatred towards another. When you choose to walk in another person’s shoes, you allow yourself to see another perspective, whether or not you believe in it or see things the same exact way. Relating to another through love and compassion is magnetic and healing. Love can restore anything; and love can heal everything.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I was always a sensitive and empathic child growing up. But I was embarrassed that I could and would feel so much. I tried to hide this side of me, but muting myself, my abilities and my personality only made me feel much worse. As a performer in my college years, I learned more and more about myself and embraced my unique traits. And one day, my loving friend Courtney Glaude (Director/Writer of “The Reading” with Lee Daniels and Monique), said something powerful to me that gave me the chills. Courtney said, “God made you sensitive, emotional and empathic, and with those gifts of connecting with others and your emotions, you are able to tap into human experiences in acting and music that carry the feeling to a profound level. It is your God-given gift and your pure talent. It’s no wonder God gave it to you.” I remember how his words touched my soul, especially coming from such a remarkable human being and extraordinary powerhouse. And so, I learned to use my God-given emotions as my power and embrace it all.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The young kids getting into my industry often try to mold themselves into a size, or a look, or a fad that will never last. Society and culture shifts too often on what is cool and what appears but is not the ideal “perfect”. The truth is, the more authentic you are to yourself, the more “perfect” you are, as it is the beautiful unique attributes of you that no one else will ever have that makes you shine. You are unique to you. So the more you look outside yourself, the more you buy into the lies and achieve much less than you deserve. Your success (or lack there of) is a reflection of this misdirection. And in retrospect, as an actress, the human imperfections as one may call them are actually “perfect” and bring about a human demeanor that cannot be replicated. The truth is that being you and experiencing you, is exactly who and what you need to be.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe heavily that our heart leads the way, and our gut is the “God within” aka intuition. When we follow our heart and intuitions, we follow our dreams. Dreams can always shift and evolve over time. What you want one day, may transform into something else later down the road. I don’t believe we are destined at birth, but we each have human free will with our gifts. And the best guide for us all lives inside each of us. So, following your heart and gut will guide you on the path or paths you are born to lead.
