Tha salmex shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Tha salmex , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me ain’t really normal. It starts early, chasing ideas before the sun’s even up. Between studio sessions, phone calls, and planning the next move — I’m either creating, performing, or pushing the brand forward.
Some days it’s mixing down a new track. Other days it’s designing the next collector’s box, talking with sponsors, or setting up a show in another city. But no matter what, I’m always building. Always representing Houston. Always Tha Salmex.
It’s not about fame — it’s about legacy, community, and proving that dreams don’t stop for anyone.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I go by Tha Salmex — an independent artist out of Houston’s Second Ward, representing Latin street culture through music, visuals, and community. My brand is built on turning struggle into style — mixing cumbia, trap, and real-life stories into cinematic experiences that feel like art, not just music.
What makes my movement unique is how I bring everything full circle — from collectible figurines and luxury cigar-box packaging to creative sponsorships that give back to local Latin-owned businesses. Every piece I drop — whether it’s a song, a box set, or a visual — carries a story about perseverance, identity, and the beauty of our culture.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Who saw me clearly before I saw myself?
Honestly, my mother and grandmother. They saw something in me long before I ever believed it. When I was just a kid chasing sounds, writing rhymes, and dreaming about performing, they saw the purpose behind it. Even when life got heavy, they reminded me that I was meant for something bigger — that my story mattered.
Now, every time I step on stage, drop a track, or create something new, I feel like I’m honoring that vision they had for me. They saw Tha Salmex before I even knew who that was.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me patience, gratitude, and how to move with purpose. It showed me who I really am when there’s nothing left to prove and nobody watching. It built my character long before it built my name.
Success feels good — but pain gave me perspective. It taught me to appreciate every small win, every stage, every person who believes in me. It taught me that the real value isn’t in the shine, it’s in the struggle that shaped the soul behind it.
Without suffering, Tha Salmex wouldn’t exist. That pain gave my art a heartbeat.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Is the public version of me the real me?
Yeah — but it’s the polished version of the real me. The public Tha Salmex is the same person, same heart, same story… just presented in a way that inspires and represents the dream. Behind the cameras, though, I’m still that kid from Houston’s Second Ward who went through pain, loss, and long nights trying to make something out of nothing.
The difference is, in public, I carry the message. In private, I carry the memories. Both sides are real — one just shines a little brighter so people can see what’s possible when you don’t give up.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they say I was a man who never gave up — that I turned struggle into something beautiful. That I took my pain, my culture, my city, and built something people could feel proud of.
I hope they say Tha Salmex wasn’t just about music — he was about unity, about showing love to the community, about bringing people together when the world felt divided.
I want them to say I made it from nothing, stayed real, helped others shine, and left behind more than songs — I left behind a story that reminds people they can rise too.
