Art & Life with Angelica Duong,

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Duong.

Angelica, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I never thought I was going to be a photographer, until January of 2017 my friend told me that I should try it out. My friends always thought I had an eye because of my personal Instagram. I captured things in a different way and the way I edit wasn’t just a normal picture. I gave it a try and fell in love with it. I always took pictures of food and friends and traveling, but never thought I would be able to make a career out of it. Within the first six months, I borrowed cameras left and right, that way I can build a portfolio and get content. I would also just edit on my phone. August of 2017, finally got my first camera and Light room. From that point on, I just kept growing. I didn’t expect the amount of notice I was getting. I didn’t expect the photography community to be so big in Houston. I fell in love with the people, my growth, photos, even got into video, and now I am here where I am.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a photographer and videographer. I mainly shoot portraits, but I also shoot concerts, lifestyle, food, couples, landscapes, and more. Being creative is what I live for, I strive to create something out of nothing. My goal in every photo I take is to make it look like it is not from Houston and that I have at least one theme or prop to work with. My inspiration comes from everywhere whether it is a color or a picture or an item. From that point on, I just put my own creative twist to it and make it happen. People just need to learn to not be afraid and literally think outside of the box when it comes to shooting. I see a banana, I think of what the possible shoots are I can do with this item or even color no matter what people think. It might seem like a horrible concept, but it might even turn into the best shoot you have ever done. Build from one simple thing and you never know what the turnout is going to be. People should not be afraid to challenge themselves. We have amazing brains, access it. The one thing people should know about my artwork is that the way that there is always a concept behind it. That is my style; being creative and colorful with my shots. The way my shots are planned are very detailed but at the same time isn’t limited. I don’t know, kind of hard to explain – just let my pictures speak for itself.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
With everything going on in the world, the photography community is just going to keep growing. Everyone wants to be one now because of the hype. Not only that, technology is getting crazy out there. iPhones are getting just as good as a $3000 DLSR camera. People just got to remember that anyone and everyone can be a photographer or pick up a camera and shoot, but not everyone has the eye. The role of an artist or photographer has definitely changed due to the fact that before when people think of photographers, for example a wedding photographer, they think of an old dude. Now, it is like young teens just trying to put their creative vision to life. As time passed, anything we do affects our art whether it is locally or internationally. There will also be new competitors, new ways of shootings, new styles, new editing systems, and more. Although, that shouldn’t matter as long as the passion is still there. If anything, people should see this as a learning opportunity. People who have been in this photography community for years can teach the youngsters’.
