Today we’d like to introduce you to Carissa Peterson.
Carissa, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Throughout my life, I never considered myself a very creative person. I always tried different hobbies but never seemed to really succeed at any of them. I just felt like I didn’t have many great ideas when it came to creating and I would have dropped photography as well if it weren’t for the people in my life pushing me towards my goals. I was first introduced to Photography when I was a college senior. I had to finish my last semester of undergrad with a few more electives and I chose Photography because I didn’t want to do “actual work.” Turns out it was actual work, even more, work than any of my other classes. I didn’t think I was that great at Photography until my professor kept acknowledging my work and I soon realized there could be some potential there. I started my photography journey around the same time as my Fiance, Sean. We teamed up and began to work together on all of our projects and it has been an amazing experience to get to do something you love with the one you love. I had a lot of doubts in myself and what I could create but Sean was always there to pick me up and push me harder to help me see my potential. We challenge each other to get the best shots and it’s helped us grow a lot. Photography has allowed me to meet some amazing people and be a part of a community that I didn’t even know existed before this.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a portrait photographer who enjoys capturing the art of people. I like to focus on what makes a person unique and I emphasize that through the use of motions and unique poses in my photographs. I want people to be able to see that anyone can be creative. I want them to look at my photos and be motivated as well as inspired to have the courage to believe in themselves and their ability to create no matter what medium they use.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
I would suggest any new artist find a group of other artists that have the same or higher skill level than yourself and completely surround yourself with these people. This will allow you to grow at a faster rate than you would have if you chose to do it by yourself.
I believe it’s important to be active in your community and be very supportive of other artists. This will allow everyone to build each other up and help everyone connect.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
