Art & Life with Darren Orsag of Leeco Honey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darren Orsag.

Our Story. We are a messy, yet beautiful, family who has experienced loss and love throughout the years. We wanted to share our story with you and why we think our little family of six is so special. Darren lost his wife over five years ago to cancer. Meagan became a single mom through divorce a year following. It took a few years, but by the Grace of God, we found each other blended our family of six, and now we live in a dreamy little white farmhouse in Lexington, TX. We had a fun little surprise a year ago and we call her Nash Fain, after Darren’s side of the family’s Honey Business – Fains Honey. I guess you can say honey runs through our blood and deep in our family trees. We raise grass-fed beef and raw, natural honey – straight from our farm, to your table.

Our Business. We have a small little honey farm and grass-fed, grass-finished beef operation on Farm Road 1624, which reveals a “God Wink” by pointing to one of our favorite bible verses “Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul.” – Proverbs 16:24. We are family owned and family-operated farm. We also have a grass-fed cattle production with Darren’s dad, who happens to live on the pasture right next to ours. This land has been in the family for over 100 years and we plan to keep it that way. We are honored to serve our community by providing our family and friends with natural products that they can enjoy knowing that this is as close to nature as you can get.

Our Logo. I bet you’re wondering where our name and logo came from. It’s pretty simple really. Just like us. Well… sort of. We live in Lee County Texas. Local honey is super important to us. We want to be true to our roots and share honey straight from the source. You can bet your bottom dollar that honey from “leeco honey” was harvested from hives in Lee County, Texas – no blending or syrup or any outside honey EVER. Sounds simple enough right? Here’s another fun fact. The hexagon has two meanings. First, it has six sides and there are six of us in our family. Second, Honeybees fashion their honeycomb into the hexagon shape. The hexagon is the strongest shape – it is the most efficient, least wasteful shape found in nature. The compressive characteristics of the shape allow it to be one of the strongest structures in the world. We like to think of ourselves as a strong family who are just trying to make our lives here on earth as sweet as we possibly can. We are built on a foundation of hard work and our love for Jesus. God was so good to bring us together like he did. We believe that we can honor Him and give glory to his work through us by sharing our love for each other and our love for one of His most amazing creations in nature – honey. We like things simple and natural. We hope you do too.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
LEECO HONEY
Mission: Our mission is to grow bees ethically and naturally in order to provide our community with raw, natural honey straight from our farm to your table. We will never blend or compromise the nutrients shared with us from our bees – “we blend our family, not our honey” – our community will only have the best, and the best comes our Leeco Honeybees.

Vision: We want everyone in our community and beyond to better understand and love the benefits of raw, natural honey.

Values: We consider beekeeping and the subsequent honey production to be renewable and sustainable agribusinesses that are both integral to our overall community’s health and wellbeing. We value hard work and a love for the community that agriculture is able to sustain through natural products. We value family, our faith, and time with those we love.

Our Mantra: Bee You. Bee Kind. Love Jesus.

Our passion is “community through food” and connecting our love for bees, our family, and our community through education, sharing our lifestyle, and providing local and healthy food to our community.

We currently have 10 beehives and 12 more are on their way to their new home here in Lee County. We are a small operation with Darren as the Beekeeper and the Ranch Manager and Meagan as the Beekeeper’s wife, rear-er of a small herd of children, and cow whisper (aka ranch hand). We produce raw, natural honey for our community, family and friends, and new friends we meet along the way. We do our best to learn about best practice, ethical farm management, and natural livestock care from the best in the industry. We strive to share what we know about sustainable living and farming with our community.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Plan local events and invite ALL that might be interested. Create a “seat” at your table and encourage new and more experienced folks to come share a meal with you.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Please continue to support local! Whether you buy from us at www.leecohoney.com or your own local beekeeper – it’s important to buy, eat, and shop local. This helps our smaller communities have a fighting chance to establish their own small businesses AND this ensures you are getting 100% raw, natural honey. Most of what you buy in the store is syrup or a mixture of honey from around the world. You don’t know what you’re buying – which is incredibly scary.
