Today we’d like to introduce you to Garland Fielder.
Garland, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
For the past decade, I have been making art that embraces a multitude of forms; painting and drawing, sculpture and installation. I try to achieve a comprehensive exploration of a theme in my work, rather than create individual “one-offs”. I find this approach to be more generative in the long run.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The art I am interested in creates more questions than answers. My practice reflects the various avenues of inquiry that happen to be in the forefront of my thoughts at any given moment. This type of exploration usually leads to unexpected results that in turn, open up further lines of inquiry. What the viewer experiences is often unanticipated and inspirational.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
An artist has to find inspiration in the studio. If the creation of work takes a backseat to other forms of motivation, like recognition, sales, etc… then one is in trouble. If the work I am making in my studio still inspires me and leads me towards otherwise unknown avenues of exploration, then I know I am doing something right.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work can be viewed at www.garlandfielder.com anytime. I am represented by Anya Tish Gallery in Houston, Texas, where I will have a solo exhibition in February, 2019. My work was recently included in “Texas Abstract: Modern | Contemporary” by Paglia & Edwards, Fresco Books, 2014. New work will be included in the upcoming “New American Paintings, No. 138, West Issue”, found in bookstores nationwide.
