Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan M. Stephenson.
Jan, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve spent my life surrounded by art, developing various skills and acquiring knowledge through a lifetime of exposure, experiences, and education. My most valued and priceless education has come from my father who is an award-winning artist, teacher, lecturer, and juror – A. J. Schexnayder. He has unmistakably influenced the way I approach design. While growing up, lessons were both formal and informal. Viewing art was always more than appreciating the piece – it was evaluating the style, subject, composition, movement, shapes, color, values, etc., with a goal of understanding the artist’s intended message and thoughts.
I was a graphic design major in college and have taken a number of art lessons over the years including painting, drawing, dance, writing, and jewelry just to name a few. I’ve been a freelance designer since 1988 creating custom graphic art and have been honored to have helped many businesses create and build their brand.
I love creating designs that others feel a connection to. Typically, the subjects of my designs are ones that hold a special meaning for me.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art, or the subjects of the pieces, are created from the thoughts, ideas and feelings I have regarding people, places, events, etc. that hold a special meaning for me. I always seem to have a million ideas running through my thoughts. I design mainly utilizing design software, where I draw and create the various elements of the composition. I love creating this way as there are almost endless possibilities to develop and create the composition and message I am dreaming of. My approach to design is often that of a storyteller with compositions containing an arrangement of elements which flow in a directional movement for the viewer to follow – similar to reading a story. It is important to me that others will find a personal connection to the design. I know that won’t be everyone, but I hope to touch some who will find great joy and a connection to the subject and my art.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I am fortunate that I can say I don’t find being an artist as lonely. Sometimes other artists and those involved in the art community can be judgmental – whether about an artist’s style, medium or position in the community. Judging someone due to a personal perception of their work or medium is hurtful. Art is subjective, and not everyone will like everything. It is important to appreciate and recognize the talent and effort an artist puts into their art. This may be why some artists feel lonely. Look to the people and entities that support and value you, and distance yourself from the ones that are comparing or belittling your work. I believe in recognizing, uplifting and supporting all forms of art and artists.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
