Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Hartz.
Kim, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I started out in real estate when I graduated college, but, as much as I love real estate, I wanted to make my own mark. I quit my job and took some time off to figure out what I wanted to do. I did a lot of research to see what would be viable career, but also what would make me happy? I landed back on photography, and two weeks after I got married I went back to school for it. I learned everything I could about studio photography because Houston is so hot! I wanted to have the flexibility of an indoor space too. I’ve now been doing this full time since 2010, and I love how every shoot is different, every pet and baby are unique in their own ways, and how I can still have a life and do what I love.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is photographed through the parent’s eyes. I want the parents, regardless if their baby has fur or not, to see their baby as they do every day in my images. I spend a lot of time prepping for the session by meeting with the babies I will be photographing, and asking the parents about their personality, what do they want to capture, and if they have any specific ideas for their session. I hope people enjoy what I create for years to come and display where they can enjoy it on a daily basis. One of the reasons I got into pet photography was because I understood the bond you can have with a pet – they are like your kids! I think that is a huge reason why I love photographing them.
I also create photo encaustic pieces that are custom and commissioned either from a session or by themselves. These are art pieces that include my photograph, but in a very different way than a traditional print.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I think it has become much harder for artists today. Granted my experience is mainly in the photography industry, but since everyone has a camera everyone can be a photographer. It’s hurting the industry because people are not seeing the value in working with a professional photographer now that the medium is readily available. There are so many things that photographers can do to create a gorgeous image for you, something that is considered art and is a piece you can pass down through generations. The experience and outcome are well worth the cost, and most photographers have price points for everyone. Cities need to continue to promote the arts and the value you get from investing in someone’s work. Not just for the artist, but also for the enjoyment of owning a custom piece.
