Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Frick.
Laurie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a data artist. After years in the tech industry, I quit my job and went back to art school, got an MFA and started making art full-time. Turns out my engineering and love of technology seeped back into the art. It started with measuring sleep when I realized all the data about you will let you see a part of you that’s hard to see. Today, I use data to tell a story and think of the work as data portraits.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I make artwork about the future of data. Hand built, not digital. Rather than worry or try to hide, I think you’ll eventually want to see your data… because unconsciously the patterns of places you go, your time, sleep patterns, steps, genetics all make beautiful patterns, eerily familiar and hopefully comforting. Imperfect, but definitely human.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Focus on why you’re making the work and why it’s relevant now. If the art connects to something now, people will want it and the money will follow.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I show work at galleries in New York and Los Angeles, and have upcoming shows at the Anya & Andrew Shiva gallery in New York in November, and Transylvania University in Kentucky in January. I’ve just finished large-scale installations this summer at Texas A&M, Facebook, CapitalOne and Michigan State University. Next week we start a huge installation outdoors in downtown Austin – a celebration of visitors.
