Art & Life with Megan Hicks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hicks.

Megan, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Kansas and Oklahoma, spending my summers with my grandparents. I was always wanting to create things as a kid, baking, sewing, cross stitch, crochet, music, painting, you name it I’ve tried it. I took painting classes a few years before my daughter was born, but I was still searching for a medium that I didn’t get bored of after a few months. About five years ago I threw away all of my art supplies except for a few paints and my embroidery supplies. I love that it is portable and I can work on it whenever I find I have a few spare minutes.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am an embroidery artist. Hand embroidery takes a long time, so each piece is really a labor of love. I look for inspiration everywhere but mostly find it in nature and just everyday life. I try to make art that makes me feel good. I really want my art to evoke emotions in those that look at it, a smile, remind you of a loved one, or bring to mind a memory. I think this world is too caught up with money, and being fast paced so when someone really appreciates a medium that takes a long time to create that feels good. I think it’s important to really put a piece of myself into everything I create and to be genuine. I think people can sense a lie and people are tired of being lied to.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I’ve connected with artists from across the globe through Instagram and Facebook. Internet friends are real friends and those in the communities online really understand what it means to work in your medium. From there you can meet at conferences, fairs, art displays, markets, or wherever you find yourself marketing your wares.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
