Art & Life with Michael Gutierrez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Gutierrez.

Michael, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Painting and drawing have always been my interests ever since I was first able to pick up a pencil or crayon. Taking art classes throughout high school helped me fully realize my strong passion for creating. Thanks to the encouragement from my wonderful teachers and friends, I have been painting for almost four years now. As a beginner, I started drawing with colored pencils, a less commonly known technique that I was very interested in and picked up quickly. I began to branch out my artwork into different mediums after about a year, starting to work quite a bit with watercolors and acrylics. At the beginning of 2018, I started painting with oils, and since then I have worked primarily with them. However, I still find it important to me artistically to work across different mediums. I started pursuing my business degree at McCombs at UT Austin in Fall 2018 and continue to study painting alongside my college studies. My current goals for my art in the coming years are to continue creating works, something that I try to devote more and more of my free time towards.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The main purpose in my art is to capture and show things I see beauty in. I make paintings and drawing with the goal to inspire others in whatever way my artwork might speak to them. I also look to have other people realize they can start creating art by seeing how enjoyable it is to me and how much of a therapeutic impact it has on my lifestyle. My goal is to continue to craft my art, but also try to expand my impact on others, showing them the ways I paint and connecting with them personally, something I have been able to do successfully with my Instagram community.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
In my opinion, the biggest challenge artists are being faced with today is being unable to grow out of what they are comfortable creating. It has been very important for me as an artist to explore different artistic styles and mediums and I often find myself creating my best work when I am pushed to do something I am less familiar with, I completely understand the urge to specialize in something, but I think there is a whole lot of virtue in those who strive to never be complacent with what they make.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I share my art process online with my Instagram, the platform that I use most to interact with other people who are interested in studio art. I also sell some of my paintings and have a few limited edition print collections available on my Etsy shop, which is linked below. You can also sign up for my new email list, which is also linked below in this article.
