Art & Life with Paul McCreery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul McCreery.

Paul, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Growing up I just really liked to make things. I never realized I was an artist until I went to college and took the Freshman required course ‘Principles of Art.’ Every assignment my professor kept telling me I was an artist. I graduated with a Liberal Arts degree and just started working construction to make ends meet. That same professor had also told me I should look into Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. It is a commercial art school, so that was always in the back of my mind. I worked my way up in construction to a Building Inspector, but really hated it, so finally I applied to Art Center, majored in Illustration, and have been a working artist/illustrator ever since. I love it.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I grew up in the mountains of Southern California, so I snowboarded in the winter and only had a short drive to surf in the summer. I was really spoiled to live in the forest and to also have the city so close by, both are appealing to me, I’ve never felt like I had to choose one over the other.

Because of this, my work is full of landscapes, both urban and natural. I draw inspiration from many sources including surf culture, food, architecture, Americana, vintage toys, music, and patterns. My medium of choice is watercolor, I love it’s spontaneous and vibrant nature.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think the biggest challenge is that same as it’s ever been, making money so we can eat and pay rent. I have found a good balance right now, t-shirt sales pay the bills with a steady income and I can experiment with other work that will hit once in a while. You always have to hustle.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can see the majority of my work on t-shirts, hats, and hoodies through my brand Paulville Goods. I also create original designs for outdoor companies that specialize in surf, skate, snowboard, hiking and mountain climbing adventures. I license my work for home collections including products, wall art, stationery, and fabrics.

I attend the Surtex Show every year in New York, there I license my work to different companies like Target, Facebook, Camelbak, and McGaw Graphic.
