Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Jacote.
Dancing with fire and light for over 20 years, the embers of Sage’s flames are kept in the sacred realm of her heart, released as an ancient dance for the healing of all. Through her travel,s the spirit of fire has helped her find her own truths and the inspiration to ignite the imagination and passion of others. Over the years Sage has not only master her way around fire but also experiments with innovative fire and light tools and pyrotechnic effects to push the boundaries of modern dance performance.
She has blazed her trail throughout Mexico, South America, Japan, New Zealand and all through the US. Years ago Sage entered an international flow arts spinning contests and upon winning this contest the director was so touched by her entry that he invited her to film an interview and feature more of her fire dancing and knowledge on an instructional video that is still widely used with fire dancers all over the globe today. She has also been featured in such videos as “Fire Allstars” and “Encyclo Poi Dia” and has been flown to many fire festivals to be a judge or a teacher. This quickly gained her world recognition and the respect of many other fire dancers and is known as someone who helped pave the way for the fire dancing profession in the United States. Currently Sage has been applying her imagination and skills in directing, producing, dancing, choreographing, and costume making for shows with the Texas-based fire troops Sangré Del Sol and Solar Rain. Her troop Solar Rain can be seen every year at the Texas Renaissance Festival in Magnolia. Texas in the Jousting area right before the fireworks show. She also teaches flow arts as a moving meditation to children, adults, and elders to help with coordination, community, memory, self-confidence, fun and for emotional and physical strength.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a Fire and Light Dancer, Flow Arts Teacher, Choreographer, Creative Director, Jeweler, and Silversmith teacher. I create beautiful shows and dance routines with fire and light to appease my own spirit and to inspire others to help open their hearts, ancient depths and enjoy themselves. I also teach flow arts as a moving meditation to children, adults, and elders to help with coordination, community, memory, self-confidence, fun and for emotional and physical strength. The jewelry I make with silver, brass or copper and many medicinal stones and herbs for power amulets, adornment, and healing. I have several different techniques for making jewelry, and some of them involve sculpting, casting, fabrication, and soldering which I do teach to people. It helps them feel empowered. When they wear something that they have made with their own hands, it gives them a sense of accomplishment and feeling good about themselves. We all need that!
My artwork is infinite in which it can explore everywhere and everything and encompasses darkness and light with a sense of beauty, wonder and depth.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Follow your heart and listen to that inner voice. Be an open channel and get yourself out of the way! Know that prosperity is possible for artists. Get someone else to help you with the business side of it so you can focus on creating. Get your self out there in the community and try not to be too much of a hermit for too long. Also work on a little of your art every day if you can, even if it is just conceptualizing.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support? My dancing work can be seen with Solor Rain at the Texas Renaissance Fair every year in Magnolia Texas or at Sherwood Forest Fair in McDade Texas. Also, I can be hired for private parties as an individual dancer or as a troop. We have two websites for the fire dancing – Sangre Del Sol is www.sangredelsol.us, and Solar Rain is www.solarraintx.com. Also if someone wants to hire me as a Flow Arts or Fire Dancing teacher my email is sagefire88@hotmail.com.
As far as my Jewelry goes, I am working on a website for that now, and it will be up soon. If anyone is interested in learning how to make jewelry I teach at Creative Side Jewelry Academy in Austin Texas – www.creativeside.org.
