Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Billings.
Stephanie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Well I always had a love for creating art. High school was where I was really able to explore many different avenues, from drawing to painting to ceramics. I loved it all! I was accepted into the New Hampshire Institute of Art during senior year. I loved that school and the small one on one environment they had and wanted to be a part of that. Once there I was able to explore printmaking, ceramics, photography, drawing, painting and illustration. I received a Bachelor’s degree in Illustration as well as my NH teaching certificate. Since college, I have done several commissions as well as my own projects, and that continues here, being new to Texas in the last 6 months. I am very excited to start building my presence in this area.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
In all of my artwork I have tried to capture childlike wonder and amazement. That awe or wow moment we all remember from when we were kids and saw something just so cool. My artwork is cheerful, positive and usually quite colorful. From things like a hot air balloon taking off over a lake to the idea of having your own sea creatures in a jar, I focus on detail and color to draw in the viewer and give them wonder and curiosity like when they were kids.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Do as many shows as you can! Even if your showing older stuff, or only have a few pieces. Being at the shows is where you really find other artists, connect, make friends, colleagues and people you can turn to, ask for advice, or get support from. It is always hard for me, being somewhat shy in crowds, but the shows are where I really networked and met so many great artists, as well as heard about other opportunities that were around that I had been missing! It’s the best way to dive in!
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can see my work on Instagram, Facebook or my website. GraniteCarouselDesigns.com @Granite_Carousel_Designs. These sources are always updating and growing as well! I do several shows in the area, as they come about, such as Pancakes and Booze, Chocolate and Art, Hardy and Nance and many others! To contact me visit any of the online avenues and I can be messaged directly, as well as my contact information is available on my website.
