Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Reiser.
Susan, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My high school, Episcopal Academy, used to be located next to the Barnes Foundation in Merion, PA. During art class we would walk over to view Dr. Barnes’s private collection and sketch the inspiring works of art. That experience taught me to seek and trust beauty in a way I never knew existed. Through emotions and through the spirit. I began painting at sixteen and have developed my own energetic and unique style over the last twenty-four years. Today I am a full-time working artist spending up to over 50 hours a week at my easel.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a devoted painter because I am in love with art. I seek to live an interesting life and being an artist brings me adventure. I live for adventure! My career turns strangers into friends, allows me to travel to places I never expected and explore subjects that I didn’t know I would ever have an affinity for. My work explores contemporary seascapes, cloudscapes, golf courses, and large vibrant abstracts. Through art I have one single aim. To unearth the beauty all around us and display that to others. I can’t think of a more meaningful way to spend my life. I live on a cloud that I never want to leave. Cloud Nine.
Cloud Nine Studio is located on our family compound and my mother, Betsy Schaffer, is also an artist. Our large, fabulous art studio also doubles as my gallery and is open to the public by appointment only. It’s a special place that brings artists and art lovers together. In the winter months I will clock over eight hours a day in the studio and the rest of the year I am painting en plein air around our farm. I aim to release a strong sense of rhythm to my work through relentless energetic expression that is inspired by the natural world. My reverence for water and love for the outdoors has me painting by our pond, open fields or even smack dab in the middle of our stream on any given day.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I am guided by my passion for beauty. I believe in the work I create and I am very committed about putting it out into the world. Let it be known that I have a higher purpose beyond commerce. Every day I aspire to create something beautiful from nothing. When I create something that has never existed before I explode with a powerful feeling of ultimate freedom. This feeling is translated through my work and I am told it brings joy and happiness to others. And in my opinion, that’s why we’re alive to begin with. To be happy. To be on Cloud Nine.
