Today we’d like to introduce you to Tahira Christensen.
Tahira, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve always loved baking since I was a little girl. My mom would always make us custom sheet cakes for our birthdays and she would create any design that we wanted. She was an artist and math wiz so with both things combined she made some quite amazing cakes, and this was well before Pinterest. I loved the cakes and cheesecakes she made but she made them from box cakes and I was really interested in what they would be like from scratch. After learning an orange muffin recipe in home economics class in 7th grade I started my scratch made journey and became the go to baker in my family for all holidays. I did it as a hobby here and there through high school and college and early adulthood, until I hit a point when I was burnt out on my retail management job and wanted to create something of my own. I realized baking was my strong suit and started reading and studying building a business nearly 4 years ago and have just grown from there. I’ve now got my desserts in 2 restaurants in Seabrook where I live and I hope to open a dessert bar in the next few years! For now, I’m building my recipe list, business knowledge and clientele.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create custom cakes, cupcakes, cheesecakes and chocolate covered treats. I create custom cakes and treats based on themes and color schemes provided by my clientele. I really try and create flavors and designs that will frame important moments in their lives. I have certain things that I can smell or taste and they instantly take me back to a happy memory in my life or make me think of someone I love. I want to create the flavors that when they taste them, they remember those happy times and/or create new ones. Creating a custom cake for a client’s birthday or other special day is like giving the best gift in the room. You have the opportunity to create something that reflects their personality, their passions, and their interests at the time. The smile on their faces makes all the hours and sleeplessness all worth it and brings me such joy.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Join as many groups as possible. There can be a lot of community and networking if you look for it. It can be hard for people in your everyday circle to understand your struggles or concerns and offer sound advice, but there are others out there that understand
Take your time determining what you want your business, artwork, etc. to be and represent, what impressions you want to leave on the world. You have to be resolute in your decision making because so many people will have feedback and advice on what you should do or how you should do it. And while at times this can be helpful, most times you will be able to see that it doesn’t align with your goals. However, if you don’t take the time to define your goals you won’t be able to determine that and you can end up unhappy with what you are doing.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
