Art & Life with Yany Perez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yany Perez.

Yany, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born in Cuba and moved the U.S with my family when I was ten years old. I am married to a very talented musician (not saying that just because he’s my husband, he truly is great 🙂 and we have a three-year-old son named Liam. I can’t say my passion for photography started when I was old enough to hold a camera, that wasn’t the case for me. For many years I struggled to find my passion. Coming out of school I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I can’t tell you how many things I tried. Ha! It took me a long while to figure it out but once I did, I knew photography was IT.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a Photographer specializing in maternity, newborn & families. This year I also started photographing births, which is my absolute favorite to photograph. I had been wanting to for a long time but just like anything, getting your foot in the door is not the easiest. Birth is such an intimate space that not everyone is willing to “let a stranger in” but in January I met a wonderful midwife who introduced me to a sweet mom that was expecting. We met and long story short I was able to witness and document an AMAZING birth….and I was hooked! Since then I have photographed three births (and it’s only April.) To me, there’s nothing more incredible than the miracle of life and I feel extremely lucky and honored to be able to witness it and document it. For me personally, that day was such a blur. Sure, I remember the indescribable feeling once I met my baby, but the journey to get there that day, I don’t remember much. I love being able to provide images that help parents relive that moment. I also love photographing babies. My style is very much minimalistic, I keep newborn portraits very simple, without overpowering them with props or unnatural posing. Babies are perfect just as they are. I let them take the lead throughout the session, rather than forcing any particular positions, it’s the safest for babies and leaves room for their character to show. I also photographed my first puppy session this year. I had so much fun with this one and everyone seemed to love “newborn” puppy photos. Funny enough it was very similar to photographing a newborn baby. It’s also the photo that got me featured on Voyage Houston! 2019 so far, has been a year of definite growth for me, personally and professionally. I love what I do and seeing the reaction on my client’s faces when looking at their photos, it’s the best feeling. Time goes by so quickly that I find so important to document the special moments that flee your mind over time but when looking at photographs, you’re able to relive them all over again.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Start with what you have. At the beginning, I kept thinking, “I’m not ready, I don’t have the “right” gear, the right this or that” If it wasn’t for my incredibly supportive husband to give me the push I needed I probably still wouldn’t have taken that step. Don’t feel like you have to have the latest tools to be able to start. Everyone starts somewhere.
