Art & Life with Yorick Tattoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yorick Tattoo.

Yorick, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I attended a prestigious art school in Belgium, Institute Saint-Luc, for a very short period of time before I left to become a tattoo artist. The principal of my High School actually enrolled me there because I couldn’t stop drawing on the desks, walls, etc…

Then I met the amazing and talented Jef Palumbo (who started graphic style/La Bucherie Moderne years later) who taught me how to tattoo by giving me a machine, putting me in a room alone with a customer, and saying “go at it!” He would usually come in to check on me and tell me it looks like sh*t and he will have to fix it. This was my “old school” training. Very different from artists now days!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?

I find my flow with nature. My style reflects the duality of light and dark, growth and decay, soft beauty and agonising pain. I am French so I was lucky enough to grow up with amazing architecture and antiques all around. I found my calling in the Art Nouveau style but I am always evolving and finding new way to explore and invoke contrast within myself.

I have been tattooing for 17 years and call my style “Poetic Tattooing” since I take people’s stories and compose my artistic interpretation of who they are.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
My advice for other artists is to not compare yourself to where others are skill-wise or popularity-wise on social media. Everyone’s talents are different and social media is no measure of respect from your artistic community!

I also think we can all succeed in this together. No need to tear others down just to build oneself up. I love to be surrounded by artists who share and support each other to grow. Sometimes someone will give one word of advice, one key, which unlocks so much potential. Those moments are really special.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
