Asukwo Effiom shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Asukwo , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I used to struggle with stage fright, but over time I developed confidence through practice. Now public speaking has become a strength I use when teaching in schools or addressing groups in religious settings.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Asukwo Bassey Effiom, and I am an artist and art instructor based in Nigeria. My practice focuses on stylized art and semiotics, where I use symbols and visual language to tell stories and spark reflection. What makes my work unique is that I don’t just create for aesthetics, I use art as a tool to engage with social and societal issues, offering new ways to see and think about them. Alongside my studio practice, I also teach, which allows me to share creativity with younger generations and help them discover their own voices through art. Right now, I’m continuing to develop works that challenge perception while staying deeply rooted in my personal style.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that shaped how I see the world was when I realized that death means we don’t see our loved ones again. It made me understand that life is not a forever place, and that awareness has changed the way I value time, people, and the things I create.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there have been many times I almost gave up. In those moments, I misunderstood what true success really means. I got caught up in unnecessary company and competitions, even thinking wealth alone defined success. There were also immature times when I found myself waiting for the world’s approval instead of trusting my own path. But I’ve since grown from those lessons. Today, I see success as living with purpose, creating impact, and growing consistently, that perspective keeps me moving forward.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say what truly matters to me are art, growth, and humanity. Creating, evolving, and making a positive impact on people.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will say that I lived with purpose, that I used my art to inspire growth and touch humanity in meaningful ways. I want to be remembered as someone who created beauty with depth, who spoke through symbols, and who left behind more than artworks – but also values, lessons, and encouragement for others to keep going on their own journeys.
