Avery Foshee & Katie Lynn Patterson of Cypress on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Avery Foshee & Katie Lynn Patterson. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Avery & Katie Lynn, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Katie: The mountains & getting into the cold
Avery: Taylor Swift, the color pink, and my cat, Bunny.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Katie: Your go-to OG Houston piercer.
Avery: The hottest, funniest, coolest tattoo artist in the Houston area.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Katie: My father. He has the strongest work ethic of anyone I know. There isn’t an ounce of quit in that man. The biggest compliment I’ve ever been given is that I was like my dad.
Avery: I had a few mentors who taught me the basics, but I learned most of the important things on my own.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Katie: Fear itself. There are so many things I was afraid of and that weren’t great to go through, but they weren’t as bad as I thought they would be. The failure and pain I went through helped me grow and didn’t break me.
Avery: The fear of failure. But doing it anyway has taught me resilience.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Katie and Avery: That you have to be a certain way: tough, out for yourself, a street-shop environment. That safe spaces aren’t cool and that tattoo shops should be filled with smoke, drugs, booze, and tough dudes, with traditional tattoos only. Historically, everyone in the industry is competitive and male-dominated. Piercing suffers less than tattooing, but these biases are still present.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Katie: I would hope they would say that they missed the connection, guidance, and healing of the piercing process. So much care & compassion can happen in a 15-minute interaction.
Avery: I hope they would miss our jokes & the light environment that we cultivated.
