We recently had the chance to connect with Cane Webster and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cane , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What battle are you avoiding?
Self destruction. It’s a hard but beautiful thing as it helps me get to really know myself. It’s a battle I feel a lot of people go through, especially nowadays. It’s hard to feel confident in yourself sometimes when you don’t see success immediately, but if you can overcome and learn from it, you’re growing stronger and becoming an even better version of yourself.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cane Webster. I like to dabble in a little bit of everything because I feel like the more involved you get with new experiences, the more creative you can get. Don’t box yourself into just one thing, experimenting and exploring is what helps you land on and learn what you’re best at.
I was in the music scene for a while, always afraid to fail so I would try to do what I thought others wanted. But in the end, it wasn’t fulfilling. The reason I started music in the first place was to connect to people that felt like I did. Kid Cudi was my biggest inspiration as I felt like he was a role model to me showing that other people have thoughts and feelings similar to mine. So I wanted to somewhat follow in his footsteps.
After giving music a go and not receiving the support I was hoping for, I decided to step back and just focus on “real life”. But it wasn’t fulfilling always funny because the people that never showed any support were always the ones that seemed to ask about my music wondering if I was still making it. I could have been if y’all showed some love originally. But as I said, you learn from these experiences.
Another inspiration of mine is Travis Scott. Being from Houston I was a fan from the start. But it wasn’t fulfilling always more than his music, the videos, the memorabilia, it just opened up something inside of me. It opened my eyes that being creative doesn’t have to be a one lane road. And now I’m designing my own clothing, I’m currently working on my first board game, and I’m learning how to open/ start up my own business. When one door closes, another doors opens.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My dad. No matter what I tried he supported me 100% in everything. My dad grew up also wanting to be a singer listening to bands like Pink Floyd and Styx yet when I started rapping, he was in all the way. I showed him the artists that inspire me to doing the work I do and instead of questioning it or telling me it won’t work, he also inspires me and give me the confidence to go and create what I want to create. He has always been my biggest fan and I felt like if he could like what I made, that was enough for me.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Even with failure, I’d rather try and fail then to live a life wondering what could have been. Learning that early on has helped me to always try new things and to get out of my comfort zone.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Kanye West. That name alone gets reactions. Growing up where I did, everyone seemed to know of each other before ever meeting and whatever they were told, is how they saw you. Even if they haven’t met you themselves. I just can’t stand close minded people who refuse to be wrong. I don’t always agree either what Ye says but I admired him for speaking on what he truly thinks and doesn’t fold the the industry or corporations he collabs with trying to alter his ideas. That speaks to me. We live in such a fake world now, I prefer people that color outside of the box.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I think everyone and everything in the world is connected. We are all a piece of the puzzle. We don’t live our lives for ourselves, it’s the interactions that matter the most. Everyone has something to offer even if it’s something as simple as kindness. Someone may grow up in a terrible environment and all they needed was some kindness in their lives to transform them into the person they’re meant to be.
