Today we’d like to introduce you to David Braden Horn.
David Braden, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Despite being raised in an artistically inclined family, I went to work for a large corporation after college and had a 20-year career in the logistics industry. When I left the corporate world, I started to source and import classic overland vehicles for resale in the US, and began to document my travels in words and images. This lead to being published as a travel and automotive writer and photographer, an art and skill I am developing and I adore. I love the process of trying to capture a journey in a unique and compelling way.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My main creative outlet is travel magazine features that are normally about 12 pages long. They are usually oriented around a journey by car or truck. I both write and photograph them, which is a little bit more challenging than doing one or the other. I find capturing images comes much more naturally, while the writing is no less satisfying, but much more work. I try and balance sensory descriptions with the themes and threads that move the story forward. I take immense satisfaction in telling a compelling story.
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
That’s a tough one. It really helps to be organized and disciplined, and very hard working.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My last piece was in a quarterly magazine called ‘Overland Journal’, about a trip my wife and I did in Guatemala. My Instagram feed is @heritageoverland. We have an online store with quality travel goods, and we occasionally have a restored Land Cruiser for sale. I’m currently working up ideas for a travel piece of book length.
