Today we’d like to introduce you to Delynn Halloran.
Delynn, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I consider some of my most prized assets to be the boxes full of photographs (some on tin) of my ancestors dating back to the mid-1800s. The saying is true, “If you don’t think photos are important, wait until they are all you have left.” This is especially true in Houston where during hurricane evacuations, the box of family photos is among the first things to be packed.
My interest in photography began with my communications degree from Texas Tech University. After taking some more photography classes at Rice University, I continue to turn my love of photography into a successful business (Delynn Photography).
My job as a photographer is to create a portrait experience for people. Designing custom portrait sessions unique to the individual is one of my favorite parts of my profession. I have the privilege of creating snapshots into the lives of individuals that will last a lifetime. I spend a lot of time looking at creative resources and locations to make sure my clients receive exceptional results.
My biggest encouragers in my life my husband of 28 years and my three daughters who are currently in college. I cherish my relationship with God because without him, all of this would not be possible!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I believe in the influence and power of a photo and the inspiration it can give not only to the viewer but especially to the individual through the portrait experience. I’m not JUST about beautiful portraiture. My philosophy is the portrait experience should be just as grand and meaningful as the final portrait particularly for young people.
Teens and especially seniors are at a crossroads in life. Many are uncertain where they are going, what they are doing and who they are. Even for a little while, I am given the opportunity to be a beacon of light and inspiration that encourages them to see how they are uniquely and wonderfully made.
For so many teens, worth is measured in superficial perfection and validation from social media. Understanding self-worth and divine purpose is a message many of our teens today don’t hear enough of. I believe each person is divinely made and I love sharing that with my clients while I’m photographing them.
This year I’ve started something new in my business. I’ve asked several outstanding 2019 seniors to be my inspiration all year long as we capture their entire senior year through portraits. Not only are these girls outstanding, they are intelligent, leaders, and role models. Each embody attributes that need to be spotlighted among their peers. My challenge is to capture not only their physical beauty but to share and portray their true inner beauty as well.
We will spend time together over the next year not only having a blast creating unique and personal photo shoots but discovering what true beauty looks like. My manifesto is to create a custom portrait experience that will empower and create a positive and uplifting message affirming divine worth.
How can artists connect with other artists?
The environment for artists, especially in photography, has many opportunities to learn and to grow. The sharing of ideas via social media platforms has helped me grow in my photography much faster than traditional ways of learning. I love electronic resources much like Voyage Houston where I can read about other artists in my area. While there are tons of photographers in Houston, I value “community over competition.” As photographers, we should work together and help each other be successful.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
A sampling of my work can be found on my website and on my Instagram account. (delynnphotography.com and delynnphotography on Instagram. I also have a mini gallery in my office which I enjoy sharing!
