Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Sanders.
Kimberly, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a local actress here in Atlanta, Georgia. I developed the love of performing arts at the tender age of 7. Being adopted out the foster system and paired with my mother who loves the arts was the best thing that ever happened to me. Seven years old is when I was introduced to my vocal abilities. While having the honor of singing at the capitol for the governor, I was soon introduced to another talented ability. Once my mother noticed how well I was doing in the arts, she proceeded to send me to a performing arts school. There my dance abilities erupted. I became the talk of the school and scored every lead role in all of the productions. I would soon tour Canada, New York, Boston, etc. in the apprentice dance company called, “ Moving in the spirit,” at 12 years old. Moving forward into my adult life, I scored my first paying gig at 21 years old in an all dance production as one of the leads. Currently, I can say that I am still in love with performing arts. I’ve been able to transition from the stage to film. I’ve just completed the tour for Its Major movie as another lead role, the wife, Mia Major.
The movie tour included A premiere in Atlanta, GA, a premiere in Los Angeles California, a premiere in Winston-Salem North Carolina and Louisville Kentucky. The film also featured big names such as Tawanda Braxton, Ebony Steele, Arnez J, and several social media famous youth. This is definitely not the last stop for me. Besides the performing arts, being a full-time mother completes me in a way that cannot be explained. My daughter is my best friend. We cry together. We eat together, she still even sleeps in my bed at 11 years old. We have the utmost respect for each other and a relationship that no one can tear apart. I trust her, and she trusts me. I believe everyone should have that type of connection with there children. She is the very reason I decided to further my education. I know that I am an example to not only my daughter but other young woman and I don’t take that lightly. I plan on giving back what was given to me, the love of the arts to other foster, adopted, or underprivileged children by open my very own theater academy. If I can find healing and happiness, regardless of who raised me, because of the arts, then I know that another child can too.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art is performing arts. I’m an actress with the ability to sing and dance. I find comfort in the theater and the stage. I’ve just recently transitioned to film. Although there isn’t a physical audience, I still find the same gratification as theater. I love what I do, and I feel like I’m living my purpose. I find most of my roles pretty easy to play, mostly based on my background as well as observing other individuals. My art has been able to provide for me in ways I never would have an image. My mother use to tell me,” If you wake up in the morning and all you think about is performing, then sweetie that is what you were put here to do!”
How can artists connect with other artists?
Being an artist can be lonely, especially if you’re not surrounding yourself with those that share the same craft as you, or those that truly love and support you. A bit of advice, you definitely can’t do it alone. Find classes, workshops, and any networking events in your area or even in some popular acting states. Plan a trip. You definitely have to step out of your comfort zone. Dare to dream!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My projects are on several social media and digital platforms. Its Major movie is one of the most recent films I’ve been a part of. The movie hits Xbox, AT&T, Hulu, etc. You can also find It’s Major movie updates @itsmajormovie on Instagram. I can personally be found on Instagram @iamlady_kim and Facebook as Kimberly Sanders.
