Check out Nina Struthers’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Struthers.

Nina, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always been an artist…. I was raised in England and as a teen, started drawing people’s suburban homes for cash. Moved to the USA and I went to art school at Rutgers in NJ and majored in painting and printmaking.

I lived in Canada in the 80’s and 90’s where I hung my art in many galleries throughout Edmonton and Calgary. I moved to the Houston area in 1998 and did some big festivals including BCAF and International Festival as well as Artoberfest in Galveston and Rockport art festival. Now I’m settled in old Richmond, I rent a studio at Fort Bend Art Center in Rosenberg and conduct printmaking workshops!

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I love to work with pen and ink – I draw smaller intimate drawings in the style of pointillism. My subjects are varied and I enjoy catching the detail in the veins of a leaf, the casting of light and shadow on an old barn, or the expression on a beloved dog. I recreate my drawings using intaglio printmaking. It’s a perfect medium for me because I can create detail and texture on a plate – and produce a delicate, expressive etching. I like to teach printmaking, there something magical about creating a plate from your drawings and revealing a hand done print after you run your plate through a press!

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
Artists need to find a niche in their community especially if they live in a smaller town. I have been in many galleries in the past, in Houston and in 2 large cities of Canada – but now I’m more interested in finding walls to hang where EVERYONE can see the art…. libraries, government buildings, churches, schools… In my mind, my art serves the general public rather than serving other artists. I’m a “people’s artist”. I love to draw historic buildings that locals will recognize and put a smile on their face! I also sell a lot of art on line, Mostly 5 x 7″ frameable cards. Thousands of people across America have bought my images. I don’t know if these pieces hang in bathrooms or living rooms but my buyers seem happy! As an older person – I think it’s become easier to sell art because of the internet – but an artist can still set up shop in galleries, find their niche, pound the pavements and find walls to hang on!

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I sell greeting cards of my work at George Ranch Historical Park, Rosenberg Railroad Museum, and Fort Bend Museum. I display my historic Fort Bend drawings at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and Richmond City Hall as well as the Office if the Commissioner. I display my art at Gallery Baroness in Richmond and maintain a studio in my home in Richmond as well as at Fort Bend Art Center in Rosenberg.
