Check Out Adia White’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adia White.

Hi Adia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I was always intrigued by various forms of artistic expression and food. I experimented with creating logos and cooking dishes, but anxiety kept me from putting myself out there. I knew that I wanted to study graphic design or something art-related, but my family could not afford to fund my higher education.

Upon graduating high school, I relocated to Portland, Oregon where I took a full-ride scholarship as a track and field athlete. In college, I started working in Corporate America to help me fund my dreams. I did not want to invest all of my time into fulfilling someone else’s purpose, but I had to do what I could do until I could do what I wanted. During my time as an athlete and on the weekends, I would cook for my friends and roommates. I took great pride in hearing the feedback and I began to build up my confidence. After receiving my Bachelor’s degrees in Arts and Letters and Art History, I began to devise a plan to return back to Houston, Texas to make my dreams come true.

Again, I found myself working for someone’s company but this time I knew what needed to be done. I began taking catering gigs and doing meal preps on the weekends. I worked late nights during the week creating logos. With Covid-19 active, a company-wide layoff pushed me into my destiny. This time, I had no room for anxiety and self-doubt. Dished by Dee was in full swing and the support followed.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth sailing process on both ends of the business, somehow they always seem to balance out. Covid19 has had a major impact on the food industry and business. Since Covid-19, many big events that I had scheduled were canceled/rescheduled. The quarantine forced some people to cultivate new ideas and business ventures, which in turn resulted in more business on the graphic side.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in cooking Creole and Caribbean cuisines. I am known for preparing meal preps, catering events, and designing art to help businesses with branding and identity.

I am most proud of my ability to stay true to who I am in my work and recipes. My mom is from Louisiana and my father is from Kingston, Jamaica so my heritage plays a big part in what and how I create. The versatility of my work sets me apart from others.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as fulfilling your personal goals and making your life enjoyable. Success has no monetary value to me.
