Today we’d like to introduce you to Aelish Lascoe.
Hi Aelish, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey to becoming a florist has been slow with many detours along the way. I started off in the wedding industry as a second shooter for an established wedding photographer in Houston. Slowly, I started taking on my own small weddings as the lead photographer. But as an early-to-bed introvert, I never felt I had the right personality to be a wedding photographer. I also noticed myself gravitating towards the floral arrangements, always my favorite thing to photograph. My husband built me a raised bed garden our first year of marriage, and there in our tiny backyard I started growing flowers. I really fell in love with the garden. We both felt we were stuck in dead end office jobs, so we decided to completely change our circumstances, move 2 hours away to a small town where my parents had just bought raw land and start a flower farm! We scrapped it together (with help from my parents) in the way child-free 20 year olds can do! We learned so much those first 3 years growing flowers and heirloom vegetables. Eventually we landed a contract with a large grocery store chain to provide flowers to them which was to start March 2020. Unfortunately the universe had other plans and that contract fell through due to Covid. I had done friends wedding florals September 2019, and decided to try and continue that route as we were unsure if we would be able to sell at farmers markets and grocery stores any longer. Thankfully, wedding work started picking up via word of mouth, and that has been the bulk of our work for the past 6 years.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In my work, I try to use as much locally grown (and also small, female-owned, American grown) flowers as possible. I believe it’s better to keep our money local, and also it’s just better for the planet. I’ll say it hasn’t been the easiest to find customers that care about this enough to pay more for it!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are known for our whimsical, cottage-garden style designs. I like to describe my style as ‘Nana nostalgia’ – garden grown charm with a cosy, seasonal style. There are so many wonderful florists in the greater Houston area, with so many different styles represented, but if you’re looking for flowers that look organic, seasonal, and natural, I could be the florist for you!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
As I mentioned earlier, we had a large contract fall through when we were farming full time. That led me to wedding work, I suppose luck had something to do with that.
