Today we’d like to introduce you to Amiyah Dyer.
Hi Amiyah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was a little girl, my mom would always take pictures of everything. She wasn’t a photographer, but she did have a Canon camera that she would use all the time. This really inspired me to start taking pictures with my phone and sometimes even using her camera. What truly inspired me to want to take photos is the thought of having memories that will last forever. I have family members who are no longer here with me, but I am grateful that someone decided to capture moments of us while they were here. I not only have memories to remember them by, but I can always look back at photos and smile. In 2019, I expressed my love for photography to my parents and on Christmas Day they surprised me with my very first camera, ever since then I haven’t stopped taking photos. In November of 2021, is when I decided to take my business serious and that was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Photography is truly my happy place and brings me so much joy. I also love seeing my clients happy as well as helping others create memories that will last forever!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Photography hasn’t been the smoothest road, but I am grateful for the obstacles I have faced. There is so much that comes with photography and I am still learning new things every day. The toughest challenge for me in the beginning was starting out and building my clientele. It’s important to never stop promoting your business and to not become discouraged because you aren’t receiving the support that you want. Someone is always watching and I can really attest to this as a newer photographer. I have come across countless opportunities just from consistently promoting my work. I learned that success takes time and reminded myself to stay focused and remain patient.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in Portrait Photography and am known for taking graduation, birthday, maternity, event photos, and so much more. A goal that I have is to one day specialize in wedding photography. I am most proud of myself for starting my own business and for staying consistent. What sets me apart from other photographers is my eye for detail, my great people skills, my patience, and my overall passion for photography.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I absolutely recommend finding a mentor when first starting out, as well as networking. My friend Oso graduated from my college and was a really known photographer while on campus. Before meeting him I was a huge fan of his work. I was asked to take headshots for 39 individuals on campus and this was one of my first real bookings. I posted the photos on my social media accounts and received so many compliments and Oso was one of the people to reach out to me. He sent me a message telling me that my photos were really nice and that if I was serious about photography that he would help me. He became my mentor and I am so thankful to him to this day for taking the time to teach me so much about photography.
