Check Out Bobby Stokes, Jr.’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Stokes, Jr.

Hi Bobby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Bobby Stokes, Jr. I was born and raised in southeast Houston, TX in an area known as Sunnyside. I graduated from Madison High School and began my college career at Sam Houston State University, where I double majored in Pre-Engineering and Physics with a minor in Mathematics. I eventually graduated class of 2016 from Texas Southern University double majoring in Civil Engineering and Mathematics.

My career began as an intern at a highly ranked ENR Top 400 Contractors company where I had the opportunity to acquire a plethora of knowledge of the construction process seeing projects through from bidding to completion. Shortly after graduation, I started work at a local civil engineering firm working in the water/wastewater industry where I was able to get involved with design processes while deepening my repertoire of skills and construction knowledge. Now, I’m a consultant at Specialty Tax Consultancy firm where I work with Commercial Building owners and companies in the AEC industry to identify tax deductions based on their involvement with building more energy efficient properties.

I am, also, a graduate student at the University of Houston-Downtown where I’m pursuing an MBA with concentrations in Finance and Investment Management. It is here in my journey where my leadership abilities are really put to the test as I serve as the President of the UHD Chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success and the 1st Administration’s Inaugural President of the Graduate and Professional Student Association.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has been as smooth as crunchy peanut butter. Coming from where I come from, every kid wants to change their circumstances for themselves and their family but are short on resources and opportunities. Some of those that are available don’t necessarily make one a positive contributor to society. Early on I ran with crowds who preferred the extracurriculars of life more than scholarly approach. It wasn’t until my junior year of high school where I decided to take school more seriously and make going to college a priority.

Another big struggle in my journey was losing my father at a young age. I was an 18 year old sophomore in college when my father lost his battle with cancer. Afterwards, I lost my focus which led to a cycle of dropping out of school to start back to drop out again.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a consultant at Specialty Tax Consultancy firm where I work with Commercial Building owners and companies in the AEC industry to identify tax deductions based on their involvement with building more energy efficient properties.

I’m also a champion for sustainability and clean energy sources as we look for ways to combat global warming. Particularly, the production and use of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

What makes you happy?
I love playing basketball because it gives me the opportunity to constructively place my anger and aggression.

Fashion is also a place of solace for me. One of my favorite mantras is, “When you look good; you feel good. When you feel good; you do good.” I thoroughly enjoy my streetwear, but for me, there’s not many feelings greater than the feel and look of a well tailored suit.
