Today we’d like to introduce you to Night Drive.
Hi Night Drive, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Night Drive had its origins in rather tragic events. The band’s two creators, Rodney Connell and Brandon Duhon were unknowingly dating the same person, someone who died in a car accident. Out of respect for the family and those involved we don’t disclose any more details about this.
They bonded over this event and, being both artists, they found themselves drawn to work together. The project naturally tended towards a darker atmospheric tone, and since that time a vital third member has been added, drummer Nick Dudek.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the main challenges we’ve faced is working with band members who live in different cities. Brandon and Nick live in Houston TX while Rodney lives in Austin TX (about a 3-hour distance by car).
Another challenge has been navigating the very volatile landscape of the music business. Labels and marketing companies and such have altered their roles in bands many times during the lifespan of our group.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in and are known for making dark electronic music, and we’re generally considered a bit retro or 80s in our style.
We’re most proud of our musical compositions, after all that’s the whole reason we got into this in the first place. What sets up apart from others is our blend of retro and modern, of live instrumentation and electronic, of dark and light. We enjoy playing with dichotomies and seeing what we can discover.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
If you’re referring to Rodney’s city Austin, then I believe it would be their focus on music and artists. Austin is one of the few – or perhaps the only – city to have official street signs designating band loading and unloading areas. With all the things touring bands have to deal with, we greatly appreciate that sort of thing.
If you’re referring to Brandon and Nick’s city Houston, then I believe it would be their cultural diversity and visual art community.
