Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Roberson.
Brandon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am the owner of Six Zero Athletes located here in Houston. I am originally from Rosharon, Texas.
Basketball has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing ball when I was five years old. I played from high school all the way through professionally overseas. I played in over six countries. Spain, Germany, France, Montenegro, Kosovo and Iceland. In all of those years, I gained a lot of experience both on and off the court. Once things took a turn with my career, I went back to the U.S. and took some time off to finish my college degree in Sport Management, but quickly started missing the gym and being around players.
Instead of moving onto another career path, I was determined to keep basketball a part of what I did for a living. It is a part of who I am, so I knew something would work out. I kept thinking to myself, I have so much knowledge in this industry, I know the game, I know the skills, I am passionate and determined, there must be something that I can do with all of this.
I noticed there was a gap in the basketball training industry. I knew that I had so much to offer that I could change the way players are trained.
Redefine the industry and really get results. I then decided to open up my own company, Six Zero Athletes. Six Zero Athletes is an elite training service that focuses on getting every athlete to their highest level, supplying them with the skill set to thrive in today’s ever evolving basketball landscape. I like to focus on skill work and infuse it with basketball IQ to create powerhouse athletes.
Six Zero Athletes is a mentality. It is a lifestyle that is built on the foundation of my knowledge and experience. It is built for the mentally tough, the ones who want to redefine the odds and the relentless athletes who never give up. In January 2022, it will be my four year anniversary. I am extremely blessed and grateful to be where I am today and I am just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In my opinion, the obstacles and challenges of starting a business are exciting, especially when you have an idea or product you know will help others.
Having your own business can be stressful at times due to the amount of time, work, effort and passion involved, but I love what I do, so there is always a deeper motivation with everything I do for Six Zero Athletes.
My biggest obstacle was learning the business side of the industry.
Learning the business side was different and very challenging for me, but I have learned so much along the way. I am used to being on the court and not having to worry about payments, scheduling, marketing, taxes, customer service, etc, so it was an adjustment at first. It was an obstacle at first but it turned into an opportunity for me to learn more about the business side of basketball.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
There are two things I love most about my work. Number one, I get to wake up everyday and do what I love. Secondly, I get to impact lives on and off the court daily and that’s something you can’t put a price on.
I am an Elite Skills Coach and I develop athletes on and off the court from basketball skill work, strength and conditioning, film study and mentorship.
I specialize in developing and refining players’ skill sets, and equipping them with the tools they need to progress to the next level of their careers.
I am known for my strong passion for the game of basketball and getting the most out of each athlete I work closely with. Every single workout I do is tailored to that players specific profile. The one thing I can guarantee is if the athlete puts in 100% they will get results.
I am proud of myself in how far I’ve come in life to get to where I am at today. This long journey in the basketball industry was far from easy, especally growing up in a small town. Overcoming so many obstacles and unfortunate situations that set me back several times during my playing career, but during those setbacks, I kept working through the storm.
I always kept my faith in God during those difficult times. Knowing that God can take what seems tragic and devastating and turn it around for good.
It may not happen as quickly as we’d like, it may feel like a struggle, and we might find ourselves longing for another way, but blessings will come from it. For it’s the way God works. He will take you through some storms just to test you before he blesses you.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is that everything I teach my athletes is game-like. This means they can actually take what they learn in a session and apply it to the game and make an immediate difference. I also take time to build relationships with my athletes. To me, this is the foundation to getting the most out of every player. I go to their games, watch their film, take them to Houston Astro’s games, Houston Rockets games and have one-on-one talks to understand their mindset with the game. All of this directly informs decisions I make when training an athlete. It’s extremely detailed and tailored to fit that player perfectly.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Definitely. I learned to quickly adapt based on the new needs of each of my clients. For example, everyone was stuck at home for quite some time, so I developed at home workouts, film breakdown videos and quick tips and tricks. I wanted to make sure people could still practice or at least stay in shape as much as possible during the lockdown.
Focusing on social media was never my main priority before, but due to the pandemic and how people consume information, I thought it was important to adopt those platforms as my main way of communicating, updating and informing all of my athletes.
