Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Mae Slichenmyer
Hi Cindy Mae, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love of baking all started by watching my dad bake pies and my mom make cobbler. When I would visit my Memaw she would bake cakes, parker house rolls and so many other pastries! She was the best baker and is a huge inspiration for my cake business that I started in 2010! I went to school for Art, like my Memaw did and then I went to culinary school for a year. I started up my cake business because of my love for baking, passion for art and serving my community delicious celebration cakes and cookies! I LOVE what I do!
Philanthropy is a huge part of my Cake business! I believe it’s important to bless others! I donate cupcakes and cookies to A Golden Heart (At Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen Downtown Houston), Icing Smiles (donating custom cakes to children who are ill), American Council of The Blind Texas, Houston Area Visually Impaired Network (HAVIN) and a few others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I left culinary school because life got hectic and I started to have terrible anxiety and panic attacks. So much so that I was agoraphobic for several months in early 2011. By the Grace of God, and my family and friends, I was able to break free from the anxiety. A huge factor that helped was making and delivering cakes. I had custom orders that needed set up for delivery across town. I chose faith over fear and conquered my fear one cake at a time. I shifted my mindset to focus on giving my customers great cakes with great customer service instead of focusing on the panic I was feeling. There were good days and bad days in getting out and about but I chose to do it scared. Seeing the smiles on my customer’s faces when they received their cakes made the anxious feeling melt away.
Thankfully, I am (mostly anxiety free) and I am able to make cakes and other treats for my amazing customers!. I strive for my customers to love the design and more importantly taste of their cake!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in custom cakes that have amazing taste, design and texture! ! I believe that cakes should first and foremost taste delicious as well as look amazing! I love to make wedding cakes, Quinceañera, celebration cakes and cakes that look like other objects/food. I have been blessed to make several cakes for Houston Legends! Trill Burger cakes for Bun B, birthday cakes for Paul Wall and Crystal Wall, TV Johnny and a couch cake for Jim McIngvale as well as all my wonderful customers! All of my customers are superstars in my eyes!
I would love to make a cake or treats for y’all! Thank you!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I was born in Houston proper and I love our city! The food, people and southern hospitality!
What I like least about our city is that 5pm traffic and that heat and humidity in late July! Whew!
