Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Ramos.
Hi Cynthia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have never been the “athletic” type, never played a sport in school, never did a workout program, and never ran. I grew up in Puerto Rico and sports were not part of the curriculum at the school I attended. Fast forward and after three pregnancies I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. I also suffered from very painful sciatic nerve and knee issues. Doctors told me I needed to “lose weight”, but I was not overweight. I felt disappointed, frustrated, upset at myself, and hopeless because I didn’t know what I was supposed to do and how to do it.
I tried “losing weight” in several ways; cardio programs, exercising on an elliptical, and several gym memberships. But, with 3 kids, work, busy lifestyle, I couldn’t stick to any of these methods, and would quickly lose interest. I tried running, my husband is a runner and I really wanted to join him because running looked fun and I admired people that ran. I couldn’t do it; my body was not ready.
I was so tired from not getting anywhere, and feeling weak. I did get inspired by a friend that got great results from working out from a home program. I started researching and followed several programs from home and I basically couldn’t stop. It’s been 6 years now.
Going back to running, is kind of why started this whole process, I gave it another try about 2 years ago. Starting with a lot of walking during the pandemic, I signed up for my first race, a virtual 5K and I completed it by running and walking. I kept with my weight training, and I added more yoga and stretching, and kept adding miles. Signed up for several more races. Each time I went running I kept improving, my legs felt better, and my pace got better as well.
Today, taking care of myself comes naturally, no longer just a couple of workouts a month. I look forward to my fitness routine and know now how important it is to take care of your body, both physically and mentally. I have experienced firsthand what positive impact it can have on your body and mind. I have found a new passion and strive on helping others achieve their goals. I want everyone to know that if you really want something and you commit, with patience, and dedication, and by showing up every day, you CAN do anything!
I’m now self-confident, no longer in pain, have no issues with HBP, I can run!
And I just completed my first half marathon at age 46!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Some struggles along the way that I had were finding the time to invest in myself and not having the knowledge and guidance at the beginning.
I had to do a lot of research on my own, but I learned a lot as well. Committing was not easy, but since I was able to work out from home once it became a habit, I was able to stick to it. Especially when I started seeing results and feeling great there was no turning back.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a healthcare professional, I’m a highly skilled professional with more than 20 years of experience in General and Pediatric Ophthalmology. I was one of only 10 students accepted into a very competitive Ophthalmic Technology program at the University of Puerto Rico and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1999. Throughout my career, I have participated in thousands of surgeries including corneal transplants, strabismus, cataracts, and glaucoma. In the clinic, I have helped diagnose and treat numerous conditions and disorders of the eye across multiple specialties including strabismus, glaucoma, cornea, retina, and oculoplastic. I’m highly respected by her peers, many of whom consider her a mentor. My passion for child patient care, attention to detail, and experience in holistic wellness makes me an invaluable resource. I’m passionate about the anatomy and physiology of the human eye and I absolutely love working with children and helping them see better.
As a wellness coach a strive on helping others archive their own goals, everyone is different and I love helping others find what motivates them, and what inspires them so they can succeed.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a pretty open book, but I don’t talk a lot about my upbringing.
My father struggled with alcoholism, and my childhood had a lot of challenging moments. Also, some people might not know that I was born and races in Puerto Rico and that my first language is Spanish and that I didn’t start talking in English until I was 18 years old. Another fun fact is that I learned to surf at 40 years old! Never too late.
