Today we’d like to introduce you to Danaja Jai.
Hi Danaja, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m originally from Buffalo, New York, and creativity has always been part of who I am. Growing up, I was quiet and observant, but I also found humor and inspiration in the world around me. This was before we had constant access to social media and technology, so I entertained myself with what was available: a pen, paper, a basketball, and occasionally instruments around the house. I wrote poetry, played basketball, sang in the church choir, praise danced, and experimented with instruments whenever I had the opportunity.
Even as a child, I was curious about what existed beyond my immediate surroundings. I remember waking up around two in the morning when I was about 11 or 12 and running outside, not because I was running away, but because I genuinely wondered, “What else is out here?” Looking back, that moment reflects something that has always been inside me: a desire to explore, experience life, and connect with the world.
Music eventually became my way of doing that.
At the end of 2015, I moved 2,000 miles away from my family and everything familiar. Being alone gave me more time to write, reflect, and express feelings I did not always know how to communicate. I would search for instrumentals on YouTube and write songs, just as I had been doing for fun through voice memos and recordings on my computer for years.
Then I came across a beat that inspired a song called “Whatever I Desire.” That song became a turning point for me because I was speaking directly to myself, reminding myself that whatever I truly desired was possible if I was willing to pursue it. For the first time, I decided that a song could not remain inside my phone or computer. I needed to record it professionally. Although I was living in San Antonio and unfamiliar with the city, I searched online, found a studio, and recorded it.
I planned to purchase the beat after getting paid that Friday, but by then, it had already been sold. When I told my mother what happened, she said, “You should make your own beats.” That simple suggestion changed the direction of my artistry. I bought a laptop and recording equipment, learned Logic, and began teaching myself how to produce and record my own music.
Because I was learning through experimentation, I did not feel restricted by rules. I blended nostalgic and old school influences with the melodies and ideas I heard in my own head, gradually developing a sound that felt personal to me.
In 2018, I independently released my first single, “Naked,” which I wrote, produced, and recorded. The song is about stripping away negativity, confronting the things we need to improve, and becoming a freer version of ourselves. Since then, I have continued building a diverse catalog that includes R&B, uplifting music, reflective records, and songs centered on celebration and connection, including “See Me Now,” “Relaxation,” “Free,” “Soul Snatcher,” and “Happy Birthday.”
Today, I am an independent artist, producer, and creative director who has built a catalog of original music from the ground up. I write, produce, and record my own songs while also developing the concepts and storylines behind my visuals. Most recently, I released “Family,” a song and video centered on love, togetherness, and appreciating the people who matter most. That project reflects where I am creatively today: focused on making timeless music that encourages peace, understanding, and genuine connection.
I am now working toward sharing more of the music I have created, expanding my audience, performing on bigger platforms, and exploring opportunities for my songs to be featured in film and television. My journey began with a pen, paper, and a desire to discover what was beyond the world immediately around me. Today, I am using my music to reach beyond those walls and connect with people around the world, which is the very thing I had been searching for since I was a child.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. When I released my first single in 2018, I knew very little about the business side of music. Before then, I had been writing, recording, and creating simply because I loved it. I had never planned out what it meant to become an artist or learned how to distribute and market my music.
I eventually connected with another artist who introduced me to streaming platforms and helped me understand the process of releasing music. However, immediately after my first single was released, he decided that he no longer wanted to work together because he wanted to focus on his own career. Suddenly, I was left to navigate an industry I knew almost nothing about on my own.
Around that same time, I invested in an expensive camera so that I could create my own visual content and expand my skills behind the camera. Unfortunately, the camera was stolen while it was in someone else’s possession. That was another major setback, especially because I was trying to become more self-sufficient and build the visual side of my artistry.
Then came 2020. Like many people, I had to navigate the disruption of the pandemic while also experiencing personal challenges, including the end of a relationship. There have also been difficulties that come with being an independent woman in the music industry. At times, I have encountered men who appeared willing to support my career but ultimately had personal or romantic motives. I have learned to be more discerning because not everyone who offers to help is genuinely invested in the work.
Another struggle has been managing the size of my own creativity. Sometimes I imagine a song, video, or storyline on a scale that exceeds the resources currently available to me. I have had to learn how to simplify certain ideas without losing their meaning, work within my budget, and continue moving forward rather than waiting for perfect circumstances.
Despite those challenges, I have never stopped creating. I purchased my own home and built a studio inside it, giving myself a space where I can write, produce, and record whenever inspiration comes. It may continue to evolve as I do, but I am grateful to have created that environment for myself.
The obstacles have taught me how important it is to remain grounded, protect my vision, and remember why I started. There will always be setbacks and people whose intentions do not align with mine, but I no longer allow those experiences to stop me. If anything, they have made me more independent, resourceful, and committed to creating on my own terms.

My mother still has a box filled with raps I wrote on paper as far back as 2006, long before I ever imagined that I would seriously pursue music.

I was still searching for something beyond the life and environment I already knew. The military challenged me, exposed me to a different way of life, and helped me develop discipline, independence, and resilience.
Being away from home also brought periods of isolation. Without my family and longtime friends nearby, I needed a positive way to process my emotions and occupy my time. I did not want to become caught up in distractions or situations that could take me away from my goals, so I poured myself into music. While developing my artistry, I was also building a professional life. After serving in the Air Force, I transitioned into information technology and earned several industry certifications. Technology appealed to another side of my creativity because it required me to solve problems, understand how different systems work together, and continually teach myself new skills.
I eventually purchased my own home and created a studio inside it, giving myself a dedicated space to write, produce, and record whenever inspiration comes. Building a home studio represented more than having equipment in one room. It showed me how far I had come from searching for beats online and recording ideas into my phone. I had created an environment where my ideas could grow.
I also earned my master’s degree in Management Information Systems. Studying technology, data, business, and systems expanded the way I think about creation. Whether I am producing a song, developing a visual concept, solving a technical problem, or building something professionally, I am taking separate pieces and finding a way to make them work together.
Today, I am a United States Air Force veteran, information technology professional, entrepreneur, homeowner, independent artist, producer, and creative director. I do not view those parts of my life as separate identities. They are all expressions of my curiosity, creativity, discipline, and determination to build the life I once imagined.
Most recently, I released “Family,” a song and video centered on love, togetherness, and appreciating the people who matter most. To bring the project to life, I returned home to Buffalo and organized a free community block party where families could enjoy food, music, basketball, face painting, and activities for children while we filmed the video and preserved stories from members of my family. That project reflects where I am creatively today: using music and visual storytelling to encourage peace, strengthen community, preserve family history, and create genuine connections.
I am now working toward sharing more of the music I have created, expanding my audience, performing on bigger platforms, and exploring opportunities for my songs to be featured in film and television. We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
It is difficult to choose just one memory, but some of my favorite childhood moments were spent playing basketball with my cousins. We were all around the same height and skill level, so our two on two and three on three games were always competitive. It was fun, but it also challenged me and helped develop the determination I still carry today.
I also have fond memories of spending time with my nephew. We would play around, experiment with music, and create things simply because we enjoyed it. Other special moments included going out to eat with my grandmother, visiting Darien Lake with my cousin, singing and praise dancing at church, and occasionally trying to sneak over to the basketball court across the street during service, even though we knew we would get in trouble.
When I think about my childhood, I do not necessarily think of one big event. I think of those simple moments with my family, playing basketball, making music, laughing, and enjoying one another’s company. At the time, they may have felt ordinary, but looking back, those are the memories that mean the most to me.
