Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrel Pino.
Hi Darrel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Darrel Pino, aka DJ Darrel. I’m a professional DJ based in Houston, with more than 25 years of experience in the music industry. I’m originally from Venezuela, where I had the opportunity to perform at some of the most important local clubs. Over the years, I developed my craft and specialized in private events, including weddings, birthdays, and other special celebrations.
A new chapter in my journey began when I moved to Houston, a city that has truly become my home. Houston welcomed me with open arms and gave me the opportunity to introduce myself to a new audience, continue growing as a DJ, and become part of the city’s vibrant nightlife scene. I’ve had the privilege of performing at important festivals and clubs, and I’m especially grateful to Fabián Latin Flavor, where I’m currently a resident DJ. Fabiáns and Cali3Latin opened their doors to me and played an important role in helping me establish myself and become known within Houston’s nightlife community.
I’ve also had the opportunity to work in radio, hosting a live broadcast that allowed me to reach an even wider audience, share my work, and continue gaining valuable experience. Every opportunity has helped me grow and has motivated me to always give my best at every performance.
Since moving to Houston, I’ve expanded my experience into different types of events, including weddings, birthday celebrations, and corporate events. For me, it’s never simply about providing music for an event. It’s about creating a unique and meaningful experience. Something personal that reflects the importance of that particular day for each client.
Being a DJ, to me, is a special way of connecting with people. It’s about inviting them into your space and your world, creating emotions and unforgettable moments. It’s not just about playing songs; it’s about taking people on a journey through different eras of their lives, bringing back memories and emotions through music. I love creating unexpected moments through transitions between different genres and watching people react when they hear a song they weren’t expecting. Music can take someone to a different place, a different time, or a special memory.
The most rewarding part of what I do is seeing the crowd respond: singing, dancing, smiling, and genuinely enjoying the music. That connection and energy between the DJ and the audience is what makes this profession so special to me.
The journey in Houston hasn’t always been easy, but I feel truly blessed by all the support I’ve received along the way. I honestly believe Houston has some of the best audiences in the world. The city has such a unique diversity of people and musical tastes, and that has challenged me and helped me grow tremendously as an artist.
Looking back, moving to Houston has been one of the best experiences of my entire career. I believe being a DJ is a constant learning experience. Every audience is different, every event is different, and every performance teaches you something new. Working with different types of people has helped me become better at connecting with audiences, understanding their emotions, and creating experiences that they will never forget.
For me, that is what being a DJ is truly about: not simply playing music, but creating moments that people can feel, remember, and carry with them long after the music stops.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges when I arrived in Houston was adapting to the incredible diversity of musical styles and audiences in the city. Coming from Venezuela, I had developed my own style and musical identity, so learning how to blend that with the different sounds and preferences I encountered in Houston was a real challenge. In many ways, it felt like creating a fusion of styles while still staying true to who I was as a DJ.
But perhaps my greatest challenge was simply making a name for myself and earning the trust and acceptance of the Houston audience. Starting over in a new city means building relationships, proving yourself, and showing people what you can bring to the table.
Over time, I learned that adapting doesn’t mean losing your identity. It means being open to learning, listening to your audience, and finding new ways to connect with them. That process pushed me outside of my comfort zone and ultimately made me a more versatile and well-rounded DJ.
Looking back, those challenges were an important part of my growth. They taught me to embrace different musical cultures, understand different audiences, and continually evolve while remaining authentic to myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Professional Dj with more than 25 years of experience.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my fondest childhood memories is how deeply music was woven into my life from an early age. I’ve always felt a natural connection to music, and while I was in high school, I had the opportunity to perform in show bands. I learned to play several percussion instruments as well as the trumpet, which gave me an early appreciation for rhythm, melody, and the energy that music can create.
Long before I ever imagined becoming a professional DJ, I was fascinated by the equipment and the art of mixing. I would practice using the DJ equipment belonging to friends, experimenting and trying to figure things out on my own. I still remember those early attempts with a smile because, in the beginning, my mixes probably sounded more like a horse race than an actual DJ set! But with time, patience, and plenty of practice, I gradually learned the fundamentals and began to understand how to blend songs and create a flow.
Those memories are especially meaningful to me because they remind me that my career as a DJ didn’t begin with a single defining moment. It grew naturally out of a lifelong love for music, curiosity, and the desire to keep learning. What started as something I simply enjoyed eventually became a passion that has shaped my entire life.
