Today we’re excited to be connecting with Denishia Linton again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.
Denishia, we are so thrilled to be connecting again and can’t wait to hear about all the amazing things you have been up to. Before we jump into all of that, some of our readers might have missed our prior interview, so can you take a moment to reintroduce yourself?
Hello, my name is Denishia Linton or also known as “D’Stitched It” and I’m a fashion designer located in Milwaukee, WI.
I reside in Madison, WI but I was born, raised, and I’m most known in Milwaukee, WI. I started my journey as an entreprenuer by doing nails, saling lipgloss (that I made from scratch), and selling manufactered clothing. Years later I wanted to test my skills and I pulled out my sewing machine that was brand new in the box collecting dust since I was about 16 years old that my mom purchased for me for Christmas.
Back story on that, when I was in high school I took a Home EC class for a semester where we cooked and sewed. I made 2 pillows and a pair of shorts. My mom saw my gift as a seamstress immediately. She decided to gift me a sewing machine for Christmas. To be completely honest my exact response was, “whats this? I don’t want this, wheres the clothes and shoes, etc. ” My mom exact response was “Its your gift”. To make a long story short her response was right sewing is a gift that I naturally have and she saw it in me before I saw it in me. I let that sewing machine sit in the closet for years. I turned her garage into a store when I was about 22 years old, and I realized my vendor started making errors with my clothing. It became extremely frustrating. While this was happening, different sewing videos were popping up on my timeline on all of my social media accounts. I was confused and tried my best to ignore them but it started to draw my attention. One night at about 1am I was tuned into different sewing videos and I decided to hop out of bed and finally pull out that sewing machine my mom purchased for me when I was 16.
I made a reversible bucket hat within 30 mines out of 2 pair of jeans, I then up-cycled my oversized champion shirt and turned it into a dress, and then I made a bra from a pair of jeans. I became obsessed and started making tiktoks. My video engagements became high and I was going viral on TikTok and Facebook. People pressure me into selling clothes immediately and I’m going to be honest sewing wasn’t fun anymore I would get in my moments where I won’t take any orders for months because all those different energies around me became draining. I didn’t want to deal with others and it made me not even want to touch my sewing machine. Two Years later my sister Zhane’ pressured me to make her a tapestry sweater. I was avoiding it but I finally took the challenge and surprised her with one of my auntie Jackie (her mom). She was so happy and after that my life changed and more people wanted me to make them.
I made over 500 tapestries but I still couldn’t handle the different energies so I would take months of breaks and not be consistant at all which would always hold me back. Fast forward to 2024 the worst year of my life. My brother was murdered on March 10, 2024. The most devastating moment of my life. After losing my brother I felt like I can connect with my clients more with making the tapestries of the loss of their loved ones because It makes me feel like I’m not alone and not an outsider. My clients are my safe space now because I know the pain and most of my clients get tapestries for the loss of a loved one and I always feel so honored that they trust me to make something so memorable. The day before my brother was murdered was the last time I heard his voice, he almost crashed into my car and I didn’t know it was him. My brother then called me and we had a conversation he then proceeded to say ” I need to get like you and start a business, I’m proud of you, your really cold at sewing, keep going, and he loves me. I really feel like GOD knew I needed to hear those words because he knew something was going to happen to my brother and GOD knew how bad that would hurt / affect me so he made sure my brother last words to me were those exact words plus some. GOD knows Nomatter how bad it hurts those words would forever stick to me and would forever push me to keep going. & he knew one day I’ll realize all this GOD IS AMAZING.
Now my business is leveled up and running better than ever. I receive orders daily and I even started to ship orders. 2025 my goal is to continue making content to show off my skills as a seamstress and my daily life. Well I take that back because I don’t look at myself as a seamstress I look at myself as an artist because I can create mastor peices out of anything and I don’t necessarily need a sewing machine to do it.
Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
As an entreprenuer I do everything alone. I take the orders, I make the orders, I pack the orders etc. I plan to build a team this year so that my business can expand but its so hard for me to do so because my business is like my baby and I’m so protective over it that I don’t want anyone causing any harms towards it or my reputation. But I know I can’t do it all alone if I want to expand. I just pray about it and I’ll know when the time is right to build a team.
I’m also working on launching my unisex clothing brand called ” B’ARE ” ( Before . Arrogance . Realize . Equality ). At Bare, our mission is to celebrate and empower individuality through innovative, high-quality fashion. As a Black-owned company, we are committed to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and cultural expression in every piece we create. We aim to inspire confidence and authenticity, encouraging everyone to embrace their unique style while supporting a brand that stands for equity and representation. I’ve been working on this brand for a year and I’m confident it will be a multibillionare business.
