By every measure, my story is about beauty.
But not just the kind created with brushes, pigments, hairstyles, or intricate henna designs.
My story is about resilience. It is about gratitude. It is about the extraordinary people whose love, sacrifices, and belief shaped the woman I have become.
My name is **Dhwani**, and I am the founder and artist behind **Just Wow by Dhwani**. Today, I am fortunate to be recognized across California’s Bay Area as a Hair & Makeup Artist, Henna Artist, and professional saree draper, working with brides, fashion shows, beauty pageants, community events, editorial projects, and even Bollywood celebrities.
Yet this journey was never part of a perfectly planned dream.
It began with a little girl growing up in Mumbai, India, carrying big dreams while having very limited resources.
## The Woman Who Made Everything Possible
When my father passed away, my sisters and I were still very young. Overnight, my mother became everything to us—our provider, protector, teacher, and greatest source of strength.
My mother was highly educated, holding a Master’s degree and a B.Ed. However, after marriage, she was never given the opportunity to pursue a career. When life changed suddenly after my father’s passing, returning to the workforce after such a long break was incredibly difficult.
With three young daughters—myself at five years old, and my sisters aged eight and ten—depending entirely on her, she carried responsibilities that would have overwhelmed many people.
But my mother never allowed her struggles to become our burden.
She raised us with courage, discipline, and unconditional love. She made sure we had what mattered most: education, values, and the confidence to believe that our circumstances did not define our future.
We did not grow up with luxuries. We could not afford professional classes, expensive hobbies, or entertainment. Every rupee she saved went toward our education, our meals, and creating a secure future for us.
Looking back today, I realize something profound:
She was not simply raising daughters.
She was raising resilient women.
She taught us that strength does not always announce itself. Sometimes strength looks like a mother quietly sacrificing her own dreams so her children can build theirs.
## Discovering My Passion
People often ask me where I learned my craft.
The answer surprises them.
I never attended professional classes because they simply were not within our reach.
Growing up, my aunt was a beautician. She became my first inspiration and my first teacher. Everything I know came from observing her, learning from her, and developing my skills through curiosity, practice, and determination.
Every makeup look, every hairstyle, and every henna design I create today carries years of self-learning and inspiration from watching her work.
Being self-taught was not a carefully chosen path.
It was the only path available to me.
But sometimes, the limitations we experience become the very things that shape our strength.
## A New Beginning in America
Years later, life brought me to the United States.
Like many immigrants, I arrived carrying dreams much bigger than my circumstances. Starting over in a new country was not easy, but I was never someone who could simply sit still and wait.
I wanted to create something of my own.
Not for fame.
Not for recognition.
But because I wanted to honor everything my mother had sacrificed for us.
The turning point came unexpectedly.
At a community event, I volunteered to apply henna completely free of charge. I simply wanted to contribute and be part of the celebration.
Soon afterward, I was invited to volunteer at **India Fest 2017**, organized by the Indian Association of Minnesota. That opportunity introduced my work to the community and gave me the confidence to believe that my passion could become something meaningful.
Slowly, one connection led to another. Also my biggest cheerleaders and inspiration in Minneapolis whose belief in me got me to be one of the board of directors of Indian Association of Minnesota.
Friends recommended me to friends.
Neighbors recommended me to their families.
Strangers began discovering my work through nothing but trust and word of mouth.
In the beginning, I never charged anyone.
Clients would insist on tipping me, and I would politely refuse because tipping was something completely unfamiliar to me. But they insisted.
Only later did I understand:
They were not just appreciating the artwork.
They were appreciating the care, the experience, and the connection behind it.
## Part 2 — When Beauty Became a Purpose
One experience, in particular, changed the way I looked at my work forever.
A woman undergoing cancer treatment reached out to me and asked if I could create a henna crown for her.
Without hesitation, I offered to do it as a gift.
I simply wanted her to feel beautiful during one of the most difficult chapters of her life.
A few days later, she contacted me again.
She had hired a professional photographer and wanted another henna crown for a special photoshoot celebrating her strength, courage, and journey. This time, she insisted on paying me and even offered a generous tip despite my repeated refusals.
That moment stayed with me.
I realized that beauty is not just about appearances.
Sometimes, beauty is about giving someone confidence when they need it most.
Sometimes, it is about helping someone smile again.
## The Birth of Just Wow by Dhwani
Once I received my work authorization, I officially registered **Just Wow by Dhwani**.
Everything that followed happened naturally.
There were no paid advertisements, no elaborate marketing campaigns, and no shortcuts.
My business grew through relationships, referrals, and trust.
Every client who believed in me became a part of my journey.
Every recommendation was a reminder that people were not just choosing my services—they were choosing me.
As demand grew, I expanded my work into professional makeup artistry and hairstyling.
Today, I have the privilege of working with brides from diverse cultures, creating looks for fashion shows, beauty pageants, editorial productions, and community events throughout the Bay Area.
Through the generosity and trust of incredible organizers, I have also had opportunities to work with Bollywood celebrities—moments I could never have imagined when I first arrived in America carrying nothing but hope and determination.
Yet those achievements, while meaningful, are not what define success for me.
Success is not measured only by recognition.
Success is earning someone’s trust.
It is the bride who looks into the mirror and sees herself transformed.
It is the mother who tells me I made her daughter feel special on one of the most important days of her life.
It is the cancer survivor who found confidence and joy through a simple henna crown.
Those moments are my greatest rewards.
## Building a Business With Heart
Growing up with limited resources shaped the way I approach my business.
Living in one of the most expensive regions in the world, I understand that every family has different circumstances. I know what it feels like when every dollar matters.
Whenever possible, I try to accommodate my clients because kindness has always been at the center of who I am.
For me, compassion is not separate from my business. It is the foundation on which my business was built.
## The Family Behind My Success
Behind every milestone in my journey is the unconditional support of my husband and my little princess.
Whether I leave home at two in the morning for a bridal appointment or return late after a long day of henna events, my husband is always there—lovingly stepping into the roles of both mother and father for our daughter while I pursue my passion. His patience, encouragement, and understanding have allowed me to chase my dreams while knowing my family is supported.
And then there is my little girl.
She is my biggest cheerleader, my daily reminder of why hard work matters, and my greatest motivation to continue growing. Every time she watches me leave the house carrying my makeup kit or henna cones, I hope she sees more than an artist. I hope she sees a mother who never stopped believing in her dreams. I hope she learns that success is not measured by awards, titles, or recognition.
True success is measured by kindness, integrity, compassion, and the courage to keep moving forward even when life feels uncertain.
## A Legacy That Lives Forever
Last November, I lost the woman who made all of this possible.
My mother left this world, but she left behind the greatest legacy I could ever inherit.
Every bride I transform.
Every fashion show I work.
Every henna design I create.
Every smile I help bring to someone’s face.
Every milestone my business reaches.
Every dream I continue chasing.
All of it carries a piece of her.
She was my first hero.
My greatest supporter.
The person who taught me what strength truly looks like.
My most treasured memory is not working with celebrities or standing backstage at glamorous events.
It was my very first backstage experience—because my mother was there with me.
Together, we helped prepare more than ten models, each representing a different region of India, carefully draping them in traditional sarees for their cultural showcase.
That moment remains one of the most precious memories of my life. Because it was not just about fashion.
It was about sharing a dream with the woman who made every dream possible.
If people see strength in me today, it is because I spent my entire life watching strength wear the face of my mother.
This journey has never been about becoming famous.
It has always been about becoming the daughter she believed I could be.
Before there was **Just Wow by Dhwani**, there was simply a daughter inspired by an extraordinary woman who refused to let hardship define her family.
Today, every brushstroke, every hairstyle, every henna design, and every smile I help create carries a piece of her with it.
Everything I am today—and everything I hope to become—will always be because of her.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Like any meaningful journey, mine has been filled with challenges, uncertainty, and moments that tested my strength.
When I moved to the United States, I had to start over in a new country while adapting to a completely different environment. Building a career from scratch was not easy, especially without formal beauty training or a strong professional network. I was self-taught, learning through observation, practice, and the inspiration.
Another challenge was finding people who believed in my talent before I fully believed in myself. In the beginning, I volunteered my services simply because I wanted to contribute to the community. Slowly, through word of mouth, trust, and genuine connections, people began recognizing my work.
Balancing family and business has also been one of my greatest challenges. There have been many early mornings, late nights, and moments when I had to manage being a mother, a wife, and an entrepreneur all at the same time. I am incredibly grateful for my husband’s support and my daughter’s love, which have given me the strength to keep going.
There were moments of doubt and obstacles along the way, but every challenge taught me something valuable. The struggles made me more compassionate, more determined, and more connected to the purpose behind my work.
Over the years, I have been incredibly fortunate to have mostly wonderful experiences with my clients. In fact, 99.99% of my clients have been so kind, supportive, and respectful that they truly become like family. Their trust and love are what make this journey so special.
However, every profession comes with a few unexpected experiences, and I would like to share one that taught me a lot about dedication, responsibility, and the emotional investment we put into our work.
On the night of November 18th, at around 3 AM, I received the heartbreaking news of my mother’s passing. While I was going through one of the most painful moments of my life, my first thought was not just my own grief — it was also about my commitments to my clients who had upcoming appointments that week while I needed to travel to be with my family.
Instead of allowing myself time to process the loss, I immediately started making arrangements. My husband began searching for the earliest possible tickets, while I reached out to my team to ensure none of my clients would face any inconvenience on their important days.
I arranged a replacement artist, informed the client and planner about my situation, shared the artist’s contact details, and provided pictures of my team’s previous work so the transition would be smooth and stress-free. I was trying my best to make sure my personal loss did not affect someone else’s special occasion.
This particular client had been in communication with me for almost a year. Despite that long planning period, the advance payment was never completed. Because multiple services were involved, I had already coordinated with my team and reserved resources. Later, the number of services kept getting reduced closer to the date, and eventually, the replacement artist who was arranged for the event was informed that their services were no longer required because the client had found someone else.
After everything I had done to ensure there was no disruption, I was then asked for a refund of the advance amount — even though the cancellation had not been initiated from my side and arrangements had already been made.
This experience was difficult, especially because it happened during one of the most emotional moments of my life. But it also reminded me of the importance of clear communication, mutual respect, and understanding that behind every service provider is a person who is also managing emotions, responsibilities, and commitments.
I continue to be grateful for the incredible clients who value the effort, care, and heart that goes into this work. The beautiful experiences far outweigh the difficult ones, and every experience teaches us something along the way.
Today, when I look back, I realize the difficult moments were not barriers—they were the experiences that shaped me. They taught me that success is not about having a perfect path; it is about continuing to move forward with courage, gratitude, and faith.

I believe luck has played a meaningful role in my journey, but I also believe that luck finds its way to those who are prepared to recognize and embrace opportunities. Some of the most beautiful moments in my career have come from unexpected opportunities, connections, and clients who trusted my vision and allowed me to bring their ideas to life.
At the same time, I believe my biggest “luck” has been discovering a passion that allows me to express my creativity freely. Developing my own artistic style gave me the freedom to create without limitations and helped me build a unique identity in the beauty industry. Every challenge and unfamiliar path became an opportunity to learn, grow, and refine my craft.
There have certainly been moments where things did not happen as quickly or easily as I hoped, but those experiences taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of believing in my own abilities. They pushed me to continuously improve and create experiences that are meaningful for my clients.
Today, I see luck as a combination of preparation, passion, and perseverance. The opportunities I have received are something I am grateful for, but the dedication, creativity, and care I bring to every client are what continue to shape my journey.
